I think Bloomberg's biggest accomplishment, and I am not being sarcastic here, are his efforts to "green" the city with 13,500 (or so) trees planted or to be planted. Anyone notice how much more beautiful and green our city is with the added trees? I've seen new trees on Houston Street (which never had trees in the middle of the Ave) and tons of new trees on the Henry Hudson. It makes for cleaner air and a cooler city (temperature wise), plus they're pretty!
True about the trees, but he took away soooo many parking permits for us teachers. We have 100 teachers in our school and only TEN got the department of ed parking permit. He wants to "green" the city by cutting down on parking permits so teachers can take mass transit. That's nearly impossible for those who commute from the Poconos, upstate, and central Long Island. He's just going to make parking harder for all neighborhoods--since now you all need to contend with teachers parking in your usual parking spots.

You are so on the money! One proof of this has been the increased traffic to the Sanitation thread in the past few days.

Anyway, I don't believe it will be like the 1970s, but there will be hard economic times. Crime won't be as bad due to the technology law enforcement put in after 9/11. The city has cameras EVERYWHERE. Criminals will only be able to get away with so much. Not too mention NYC has 45,000 police officers. It's like having a mini-army.

Ha, these are the people who will create hell for all of us!!

Default only a blip on the radar

How are those blips on the radar treating ya'? The fed cut the rate today to encourage more (bad) loans. More of what got us in this situation in the first place. The impact on New York is going to be tremendous as Wall street downsizes to a storefront in 111 St in Corona right next to a check cashing joint. The job losses will be in the tens of thousands.

And the peculiar thing is, none of them will be punished for the situation they've created.

Lets hope a mass exodus of New Yorkers choose to move out of state or out of the country. This has to occur.

It's going to be raining pink slips come Dec 1st

I'm a nurse so my job is pretty secure (for now anyway). I actually suspect that I am going to be very busy after the first of the year and for most of 2009 since stress and depression makes people ill and exacerbates chronic health problems.

My husband finally got an admin job paying him 10k less than his old one after searching for 9 months for an IT position. He hates it but I told him to kiss butt and just deal with it for now because he is lucky to have a job.

I feel sorry for anyone who is job hunting right now and I think come January 2009 it's going to be even harder.

I read in a newspaper article that the economic crisis wont have much an effect on NYC as the rest of the country.
