I agree I did not think your accent was that strong at the outing. I thought you had more of an ethnic/Hispanic accent, not necessarily a NY accent though. No worries, though, I don't have one either and I am glad!

I'm told I have one that's noticeable, but it isn't as strong as my parents who were born and raised in Manhattan and Queens. I lived in Queens until I was 3, then moved to Long Island. Most of the families in my area were from Queens and Brooklyn, so most of us had a fairly strong accent.

I have the Nuyorican accent..or Latino NY accent. My area is basically hispanic and every where I travel has a hispanic majority so I pick it up from them. The problem is that many of these people dont speak english. And spanish was my first language. I guess a mixture of spanish and black ( NY hip-hop accent) like Fat Joe, Cuban Link, 50 Cent etc
As for classic NY accent. I think its dying out especially with the influx of so many different cultures here in the city. Everybody learns from everybody. In fact I think in the future the accent will become NYLE (New York Latino English). ESPECIALLY, kids growing up in the Bronx, Uptown Manhattan and a large part of Queens.

It's more noticeable when I say certain words, but everytime I go to a different state they ask if I'm from NYC because of my accent. I don't think it's that strong either, but this is what outsiders say. I'm not Hispanic, so i don't know why I'd have a Hispanic accent, but it happens.

I live in a Colombian neighborhood, but I never speak to anyone here, and I never spent a lot of time here either, so I don't really see how it could've passed on to me.
