They are a gang bang first. You see one, you shoot. The drug crews used to dress up as police officers, take rival members into tenements and tell them to get on the walls and just eliminate groups of 30's and 40's...daily. Chicago "mobs" and LA gangs don't do that. Maybe a killing or two over drugs but it doesn't make up as large as a percentage as NYC drug murders. They are street gangs and not drug crews. There is a difference.

Great Post SuperMario. You and bluchidog are excellent debaters. I have to agree. You've both brought a lot to the table.
Can we agree in a broad generic sense that:
NYC - Drugs
L.A. - Bangin/territory
Chi - Both

Thanks for posting the link. It does give insight as to the pervasive gangs in Chicago. I would NEVER have suspected gang infiltration in Highland Park or Wilmette, for example, since I naturally would equate them with Lake Forest, Winnetka and Kenilworth in terms of safety and demographics. And, I was even a little surprised to see Oak Park on the list as well. Thanks for the information.

Chicago is a rough city and it's run by street gangs. I see it no different than LA. I say NYC is alot drugs and little gangs, LA is largely gangs and little drugs, and Chi is largely gangs and a some drugs. I can also agree about the spanish and black gangs in the Chi. The black gangs are more with the drug scene.

Wilmette, Highland Park are still wealthy and very safe suburbs, it shows in the crime stats. I believe that the reason why Highland Park & Wilmette is on the list is because it borders Evanston( which have a gang presence). Wilmette and Highland park don't have a gang problem and it is the same with Oak Park. Oak Park is very close to a dangerous neighborhood and that probably why its on the list, but it don't have a serious gang problem.

In regards to nyc, drugs = territory so theyre all in the same thing...its just that certain cities are more prevelant in certain categories. Also, I hear alot of mexican and central american gangs are growing in nyc like MS-13 and surenos...hopefully it doesnt get too outta hand

Drugs usually don't equal territory in NYC.. territory doesn't mean the place where you're standing and selling.. it means the place you're defending with your life. If someone of the wrong colors steps on that block, they're dead.. simple as that. Territory in gang terms is different than just simple territory.

I thought it was proximity to Evanston that was doing it, since some are nice and others are just bad, like Skokie (that is mixed as well), and the same with Oak Park, since I know it gets transitional around there. I know it's not serious, but still, it pays to be aware. Thanks.

For drug crews territory is all about protecting ones investment. If you lose territory to a rival drug crew, you lose customers. It is bad for buisness. For street gangs, territory is just that, territory. You are defending it just because it's your gangs territory. You dont want to be shown up, so you bang for colors. You are taught to hate the rival gang.

Sure they do. Im not talking about some 4 corner hustler slangin to pay the rent. Im talking about drug crews who control blocks and avenues that have certain boundaries. If they catch other people selling on their territory, theres gonna be a problem. If the drug crew wants to expand their business, they take it to the guns and force them out so the street becomes theirs. Like supermario said, that person intruding on your block is taking money out of your pockets.
