Does anyone here know what the consequences of taking a house and making 3-4 rooms on each floor and illegally subletting it? I ask because thats the type of residential im living in right now in Queens.

She basically has 3-4 people living on each floor ( about 12-15 people in the house, some illegal immigrants) and recently raised my rent for no apparent reason this month. I know for a fact that this isn't the only building they're illegally subletting and also suspect that by observing them that they might be in organized crime as well. Any advice?

Organized crime plus illegal subletting. Can you get out of there ASAP? Then consider legal recourses.

Could you clarify this please? What do you mean by "subletting"? Are the people dividing up and renting the space OWNERS of the house, in which case they are not subletting. Or are they renting the house from someone, modifying the interior without permission from the owners, and renting that space out? In the latter case they are subletting, and depending on the terms of their lease, may or may not be doing it illegally. There are also some legal limits on occupancy based on fire safety, if you feel they are violating this, please report them (annonymously). It could be very dangerous.

Of course it is illegal. This type of housing arrangement lowers the quality of life for the neighborhood. Fire hazard being the most important reason. Sooner or later your neighbors will report you and a buildings dept inspector will come knocking on your door.

Hi, i'm planning a trip to New York and based on the cost of the short term apartment rentals vs hotel prices i'm considering the idea of renting one from one of the various sites that do this, i,m a little aprehensive about it, is it illegal? Does anybody have a comment on that?
I want to do the typical tourist stuff, all of it! (sorry Newyorkers!! more tourists!) and it's 5 of us (3 teenagers) so i really need to strech the budget as much as i can..
Thanks a lot!

All you can do is get out ASAP...if you can.
Alas, these scum prey on people they know are stuck by circumstance to live cooped into illegal, dangerous surroundings.

(Don't call the cops...they undoubtedly know ALL about it.$$$)

I live in such a place now. I live in a room that used to be a dining area off the kitchen. I'd be embarassed to say how much I pay.

One thing to watch out for; you're at the complete mercy of the "roomlord" as to who they allow to move in, and how many. Once I was in a share situation where the "lady" (thieving, parasitical creep is more like it) turned the living room into another bedroom and moved 3 MORE people in. One of them was some whiny bimbo who seemed to have the bathroom confused with her personal beauty spa. I got into it with this creature one night cause she was in there curling her hair for 45 minutes while I was outside waiting to take a...powder my nose, whatever. I got kicked out. And, she kept my deposit.

The only reason I didn't report this excuse for a human to the city was that she had a nice little boy who would have been the one to suffer. Bad enough for him having that creature for a Mom.

This sounds like the situations described in the USSR right after the Revolution with dozens of families crammed into a single large apartment with a quickly established pecking order.
I guess, an economic downturn sinks all boats (except lusury yachts that is...they ALWAYS ride high on the waves.)
