Default Criminal history question

Friday I had a difference of opinion with a woman i work closely with. Her son who is now 30 is constantly getting into trouble, has multiple criminal convictions in NY, and is now incarcerated for a few months in a county prison

She asked me if i knew how to find out when he would be coming up for release. She said no one at the jail would tell her any info. I suggested perhaps running a background check thru the courthouse of conviction which MIGHT turn up that info(at least it should turn up his conviction and sentence)

She then claimed that no one can find out anything on him because their lawyer told her that NY is a closed record state. I explained to her that probably means that his fingerprint rap sheet is closed (such info is only available to law enforcement or govt agencies for employment, licensing) but that his record of conviction is always open in the court. She did not agree with this. She insists all his misdemeanors and felonies are closed, according to their lawyer.

Was I right in what i told her? I think I was for the most part. But she claims it's all closed. What do you think?
