Default New York City memories

Someone else started a thread about the Chow Chow trucks. This got me thinking about other aspects of life that have disappeared from the city. For instance, the old fashioned seltzer bottles with the metal nozzle. Let's see what else longtime residents (and natives) recall...

This is extremely odd, and may not relate to NYC directly, but I was thinking about this while walking to the train this morning..

When I was a kid, pigeons used to fly away as soon as you got anywhere near them.. now, they seem to just walk alongside you without a care in the world. Has anyone else noticed this?

yeh, I have also noticed how animals are no longer afraid of cars

I see squirrels crossing in front of incoming cars all the time now, but never before

I also used to notice a lot more birds before than now

It could just be some kind of environmental change, but these are things I remember seeing all the time while walking around the streets of Jackson Heights.. and now, I see animals doing things that they would've never have dared to have done before!

Good Humor Ice Cream Wagons. I remember them both attached to a bicycle and also the ice man walking and pushing the wagon.

Oh, this was a LONG time ago.

Well, pigeons certainly came close to me when I had food to give them, lol. You remind me of a memory I have.

When I visited my grandma in Chelsea in the late 80s, my mom and I used to walk down the block to Mcdonalds. I would always save a few fries and feed them to the pigeons in this park we passed. I always loved doing that. I should go back and see if it's still there. It was around 21 st & 8th ave. Anyone know if it's still there? I'd go check it out, just for memories.

The only park that comes to mind in Chelsea for me is at 28th and 9th.

I think it was just a grassy area beside an apartment building, from what I remember. Back then everything was a lot bigger to me since I was only 4, so small grassy areas were probably like parks lol
