Default Good Area's In Harlem/Morninside

I am thinking about going to city college, and want to find an apartment in the area. If im not mistaken thats the morningside area of the city. I know there are some less than desirable streets to live on a little bit up north, but some very beautiful streets as well. Can anybody very familliar with the neighborhood suggest a good street or streets to look on. I ask because cost is a factor and would like to get a good deal while still living in a decent area. ( I live with my girlfriend so she would have to feel safe.)

Is not Morningside Heights. That's more to the south and west. The area of City College is West Harlem, or more specifically Hamilton Heights. My honest opinion is Amsterdam, Broadway and Hamilton look rough. Area is mostly Dominican with a good amount of blacks. The best areas are Convent and Riverside, if you can afford it.

Can you afford a little lower, say, in the West 90's-100's?

Its not in morningside, its above morningside, but you could still live in the morningside area and have access to the college. How much do you want to spend?

Fair enough. The area overall is getting better. It went from dangerous, to marginally dangerous, to now only dangerous in certain spots (blocks). Hamilton Place is the worst stretch of blocks. Convent and Riverside are pretty much the best areas in Ham. Heights. Speaking from experience overall the area looks worse than it actually is. It's more quality-of-life (i.e. noise pollution, air pollution, littering, graffiti, loitering, lack of retail and services, etc) issues than crime.

Morningside Heights is more expensive. I'm guessing anywhere from $400 to $500 more on average. But I haven't checked rents in a little bit.
