You see, "these type of people" refers to me, my family and my friends, who are slowly being pushed out of NYC because "investors with deep pockets" have bought buildings and are charging exorbitant rent.

P.S. The bronx has less abandoned/burned down buildings also.
Your just like me bud. I wanted to stay in Harlem too. But the rents were a bit too high.

My co-worker/friend just got her car broken into this morning. We teach near the 170th st stop in the Bronx along the 4. She's a first year teacher and was hysterical. She comes from a fairly wealthy area in Westchester. Didn't think to hide all her valuables in the car. Got nearly $1000 stolen out of the car, a lot of which were Christmas gifts. She said she's had it with this school and area and that she wants to leave. Don't know how serious she was though.

My students saw this as we walked into the building. Saw the glass everywhere and her crying. I said to them, "You see that? Now you know never to steal and make someone feel like that." They were all in disbelief (they're only 6) and were saying how they felt really bad for her.

Who says you HAVE TO live in Harlem? As a matter of fact who says you have a RIGHT to live in NY at that? If you can't afford to live in Harlem, move to Brooklyn or Queens. Move to the project if you can't afford neither. Why should you have a RIGHT to live at a place you can't afford? Doesn't make sense.

I can't afford to live in Beverly Hills or in the Hamptons, you don't see me crying that I can't live there even though it would be a beautiful place to live. I look for a cheaper place to live...very simple.

You say you are educated right? Well, are ALL your friends and family who you refer to in your post educated as well? Very single one?

Did your friend have stuff out in plain sight. It's not a smart thing to do, anywhere in the city. Not just the Bronx.

Thank you. I was waiting patiently for someone else to express this, which has been my viewpoint all along. You live where you can afford to live. Or at least that's the way it should be.

I wish I had a huge loft in downtown Brooklyn. I don't--because I can't afford one! C'est la vie...or to rephrase that like the native Brooklynite I am, waddaya gonna do?

Yeah...kind of naive of her. It's common sense. But she's a first year teacher who's from a wealthy neighborhood. I don't even think she's been to the Bronx before this.

My fiance's coworker in Flushing got a window broken, so yeah, it can happen anywhere in the city. My landlord also got his car broken into in Astoria in Queens, right on our block.

I feel bad for her too. that's a nerve wrecking experience.

See one of the things people don't seem to realize about NYC is that it's a densely populated city with people from various walks of life. In every society there's going to be good and bad - especially in a city like this.

Now, 170th near the 4 train is an area I'm very familiar with. People are hustling - it's a fact! Hustlers are out there and they're going to do anything to get their next fix!

What we, the people who are fortunate enough not be beggers or hustlers, need to do is keep our guards up!

#1 - DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR CAR! My brother got his digital camera stolen from his car some months ago and I felt like smacking him because he should know better!

and

#2 - If you can, try your best not to own a vehicle in NYC - if you can - I'm not saying it's mandatory but only if you can. Because owning a vehicle brings the tickets, the robbery, the scratches etc.....
