My apartment is an old apartment in Upper West Side. It has 6 stories, I live on the 5th. On a lot of nights, at around 11pm, 12 midnight, when I am sleeping, I hear what sounds like a marble that dropped on the top floor above me. Like a big dropping sound, then followed by a few small bouncing sound, and a rolling sound. This happens a lot, even during the night when I am sleeping. Similarly, through the walls, I hear what sounds like small tapping by a person's finger, very quick, very successive. Both sounds only happen at night, never heard it during the day.

What could be the issue? Heater? But it doesn't sound like heater at all.

Default I get those sounds...

I am on the top floor and get those sounds(marble and dropping) but they probably come from the activity next door, neighbor closing closets, hanging up clothes etc

Throughout the night i get a creaking sound in the floors

The finger tapping in the walls could be rodents, many people hear mice in the walls even if they don't get them inside the apt(I know, skeevey)

Don't wanna be the one to tell you about the birds and the bees but if the bouncing and rolling sounds are accompanied by panting sounds, you have a situation of two folks having a great evening.

You said you live on the 5th but it's 6 stories. Does this mean the apartment above you is vacant - completely? Maybe it's used part-time or it's someone's office, or "office" ??

part time? office? still serves the possible scenario.

I've heard that more than a couple of times. "Marble dropping and rolling around" is an excellent description of the sound effect. Problem is, I was on the top floor! Twilight Zone music:: ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding::

Sounds like the sound that I also hear from time to time. I used to think my neighbors have a cat upstairs who likes to bounce a ball We've been told it's caused by plumbing. Luckily it's not loud enough to really disturb us.
