Default The Absolute Cheapest Place

I live in NJ and am contemplating on moving to Newark but im a little hesitant dont know if New Yorkers know the deal with Newark NJ. Ide rather live in the boroughs i know the City is too expensive but i hear parts of Harlem or still cheap or maybe by the Bowery but I would still live in brooklyn, queens, or The Bronx. I need to know what is the cheapest area. Rent: Studio 1,000-1,300.

Crazy,

Your question is not clear for us to answer it: are you moving to Newark as you say first, or to New York City, as you imply later?

If it's New York, for 1,000-1,300 a general rule is that you could share an apartment in the classic Manhattan (Midtown, Downtown) or find cheap studios in Upper Manhattan (Inwood, Washington Heights, most of Harlem).

I rented a basement studio in Morris Park the Bronx for $650 in 2002-2003. Was one block from the 5 express train. Cheap can be done if you know where to look and have the right connections.

Yeah look into areas like Morris Park in the Bronx. In NJ you should consider towns like Harrison, Bayonne, and Jersey City (journal square) for studios or 1br for $1,000. All of these areas have pretty good mass transit options to take you into the city.

Inwood is a great neighborhood (particularly west of Broadway and close to Inwood Hill Park. It's very green and hilly-not at all dangerous. We lived there for 5 years and moved to the Bronx to buy a house--a couple of blocks from Mosholu Parkway in the Bedford Park area. It looks a lot like Inwood. The Bronx has a bad reputation, but we've had no problems and crime continues to fall. Here you can rent a one bedroom for about 900/month, 2 br for about 1200.

Samyn,

Was that a basement studio oin Morris Park or a cellar studio? I rented a cellar 1 bedroom in Boro Park Brooklyn for $750. Air quality was terrible, windows didn't open or opened on untamed grass, mud, wet (from upstairs leaking airconditioner) concrete.

The landlord (or his wife) made the place look like a beautiful apartment (without good ventilation and actual window size/view of outside from inside/windows being locked) were hidden by thick blinds when I first saw the place.........but a pig dressed up is still a pig.

A basement isn't worth renting no matter how cheap the rent is and a converted cellar apartment is even worse.

Bar none it is in the Bronx...and you can find a place that is still close to the city too. Check craigslist...I think I saw a renovated studio for rent for $750 just today.
