Default Harlem (W136th to W138th Street between Adam Clayton Powell & St. Nick Ave)

Hey everyone,

I have a question about a particular area in Harlem. I've been looking for an apartment in some Brownstones in the area of W136th to W138th Street between Adam Clayton Powell & St. Nick Ave. I'm trying to get a better read on what people thoughts/living experiences/word of mouth on this area. I spent a good 7 hours there this Saturday from 10am to 5pm trying to get a feel for the neighborhood myself. I was looking to see if anyone could offer up any of their knowedge on this area. Thanks in advance for all the help and comments!

I grew up on 138th Street. It was great and quite safe then, but that was decades ago. Trains are a short walk and 4 major streets with bus lines cross town busses on 145 135 walking distance.
I gather you are a young person so you should do quite well in that neighborhood.
Good living to ya

be careful at night time. its one of the areas in harlem thats still kinda bad at night. and you have drew hamilton projects a few blocks away at 141st and 7th avenue. if you're used to the hood you wont have a problem but if you're not, you may feel uncomfortable.

Shrine, on Adam Clayton Powell over there, is a nice bar/restaurant/music venue.

That area is relatively safe. On 7th Avenue you may have some traffic and further up on 8th Avenue, but overall there are lots of homeowners (condos and townhomes) in that nabe. Two major train lines aren't far and there is also St. Nicholas Park. City College is up the hill, 125th Street isn't that far south and 145th street is also nearby.

There has been a lot of new condo development in that area. It has also kept a lot of the stores open and new stores have entered there. Pathmark is on 145th Street, and what I like about the area is that there is a really great floral shop on 135th and 8th, a garage on 135th, lots of schools, the park and Harlem Hospital. It's pretty well served actually. I think you'll be fine just stay alert at night. But that's anywhere.
