Default The future of Bed Stuy/Crown Heights?

Will these neighborhoods ward off gentrification? Will they remain the same? Will they worsen?

I've read ads in the newspapers for luxury condo's in Stuyvesant Heights; renaming neighborhoods is a sign of gentrification, I think this economic fiasco will slow down the process, people are afraid to buy right now

Actually, Stuyvesant Heights isn't a new name; that was the original name for this part of Brooklyn. The name "Bedford-Stuyvesant" was created by (it's all true!) the telephone company in 1930. There weren't many households with phones back then, so they lumped two neighborhoods together--Bedford went back to the 18th century--for their own convenience.

As to the idea of "warding off gentrification," that's not what you really meant, was it? If you investigate the history of New York City, you'll see that no neighborhood has ever remained static. They change all the time. For instance, would it surprise you to know that Brownsville used to be a solidly Jewish area?

Gentrification is movement of mor affluent people into a lower class area. When the Jewish people moved out of Brownsville they were not replaced with more affluent people moving into the area. The Jewish people were moving up the ladder financially and on to better areas. It is a change, but this is not the same thing that the OP is referring to.

Personally I don't envision these neighborhoods ever fully gentrifying. Especially Crown Heights.

brownsville was always a slum, even when the jewish were there. case in point: look at all the public housing that was erected....to get rid of the slums (obviously we know that failed).
