The cutting of diamonds is a traditional craft and art that is handed down from father to son within the Hasidic community. Among the diamond cutting centers of the world, the most skillful and artistic cutting is done by members of the Hasidic community. Not only do they have a huge industry in Haifa, Israel, but also in Antwerp, Belgium, as well as in London and New York.

61% of families in KJ are below the poverty line, according to Wiki... if it doesn't have the lowest per-capita income in the united states, it's gotta be close, such high birthrates and low incomes. $4,335 per person. What's that, like semi-developed nation numbers? That makes the Bronx three times richer.

Not so much of a commune as a welfare burden on Orange County. I'd imagine that to be considered a "commune" you'd have to be self-sustaining, first.

It's strange, but if you read through this entire thread, you could possibly pick up the idea that there's...actually...anti-Semitism going on out there!

How do you distinguish that they're Hasidic?

This should answer all your questions: Hasidic Judaism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It's accurate (unlike some Wikipeidia entries) and also describes the prohibition of contact with an unrelated member of the opposite sex.

definately alot of anti- Semitism going on here and general prejudices, But anyway,
I grew up on the boarder of Bensonhurst and boro park, there was extreme hatred and predjudice towards the Hasidim from the Italian section where I lived.
Over the years I've given this much thought as to Why and How did this relationship develop. cause as a child I didn't understand or want to participate in the "Jew Bashing" going on.
I believe it comes down to a few major issues.
first of all the hassidim are very easy to pick out because of the traditional garb and hair cutting rituals,
second of all the anti social behavior made the people of bensonhurst feel offended.
and third of all the major difference in religous beliefs on both sides (of 60th Street in Bensonhurst) One side was primarily Catholic and one side was Hasidic Jewish.
As a child i would sit on my front stoop and watch hasidic Jews hastily walk down my block and I would wonder what it was like to be part of their community, what foods do they eat, what do they do at temple, how come thay don't say hello to me?
But all those questions were answered when my Mom got a job working for a Hasidic Agency run by a Rabbi.
I learned that they are sweet misunderstood people having difficulty adjusting into modern society.

I live in Crown Heights which has a large Hasidic community and to be honest, I don't really find anyone to be rude. It is a different culture and there is not a lot of interaction but on a general basis, I have not had too many issues with anyone of the Hasidic faith. One thing I have understood is that the different sects of Hasidics have different values and interact differently with people. I may be wrong but I think the Jewish community in Crown Heights are considered one of the more liberal sects, while Boro Park and Williamsburg are more traditional.
