Does anyone know how this "herb" nonsense started anyway? I remember hearing "he a herb" 15+ years ago...I hope you guys are still not saying "she is fly" too. I mostly hear the usual "I am tight" or "I make cheese"...not the "herb".

I may be out of context here but my only familiarity with a street use of the word "herb" was an encounter one summer afternoon in Central Park. There as I was sitting on a bench, a gaunt man wearing dreadlocks approaced and was mumbling to himself while looking in my direction, "Babylon! I man need a little more weed. Seen. Need some herb brother man. Need some Babylon money from the evil man to get some herb, man,seen? You with the evil eye, Jah send I for some money for some herb, man. Seen? You gunna give I?"
I'm afraid to say that I made a hasty retreat from the park and have not returned since so I am unable to this day to get a translation of the excerpted rant or to determine what the much repeated "herb' meant. |

Well Miles I'm highly impressed with how much you know about "yardie" slang (esp. knowledge of "seen" and "jah") LOL. Somehow I'm guessing you know what herb meant, and perhaps that accounts for some of your more silly posts JK!

You are a bit young as "fresh" "fly" and "dope" were words created in the 1980s (whereas your age group is more 1990s). They were probably used mostly in NY and perhaps other urban areas (this is doubtful) as they came out of the very early NYC hip hop culture. Anyone remember any others, I love to reminisce about old skool NY? |
