It's not about wanting to stand in the middle of the car. It's about making a small sacrifice to ensure the efficiency of the entire system. If you stand in the door during rush hour and force passengers to enter and exit in single-file, you delay not just your car but the entire line. This contributes to the general frustration with the system as a whole.

Regarding crowding, the MTA is planning to do a pilot program that will have the yet to be delivered remaining sets of new trains' bench seat flipped-up as opposed to that one seat designated for elderly and wheelchair passengers. 4 cars will have the seats up and locked during rush hour. They claim 18% more capacity. NYC Transit planning to experiment with seatless subway cars at rush hour: from August. Don't expect anything on the horrible Lex. Av. lines. As far as I know, it seems that the IRT has received all their new trains.

Everyone in the city has a "train story" however most of the time, the people are calm.

I give up my seat for people sometimes, despite how badly my feet hurt (I have feet problems that like 80 year olds would have, that's how bad). I can't stand when someone on the bus or subway doesn't offer their seat up for the elderly. Despite how tired and how badly I hurt, I give up my seat. I just think that guys should sometimes give their seat up for women. Not always, just sometimes, depending on the situation.

The last person that told me they had foot problems sat in the seat I willingly relinquished for the 1 hour trip and when we hit 96 Street she sprinted out of the #2 train across the platform to board the waiting # 1 and flew out with such speed that she knocked over a stroller with a crying baby, an elderly on crutches, and a rookie cop learning the ropes in subway traffic control.

I do believe you, though, and will give my seat to you anyday, Rachael.

The interesting thing is when people come from other parts of the world with these same customs here. I'm often getting pushed by South American ladies in Queens, and Asian dudes downtown, lol. I just give them a look like WTF, the train is not even that crowded.

Hey, the trains get crowded (4.9 million riders each day is no joke!) and people get upset. You can't really expect everyone to be sweetness and light in such situations.

I agree. I don't think a man needs to give me a seat; I'm perfectly capable of standing, and sometimes prefer it. Mothers with kids, old people, etc, yeah, but women, nope, that's not rude IMO.

I love the subway and don't even mind it during rush hour. My morning starts earlier than most since I'm a teacher so it's not usually jam packed. The afternoon tends to be worse, but still it's not too bad. I PREFER IT MUCH MUCH MUCH MORE THAN DRIVING. Dealing with parking is just NOT WORTH IT. I hate driving/parking/traffic.

Some people really need to understand those basic rules that someone posted above. When not followed, that can be annoying, but overall it's not bad IMO. Gets me where I need to be 24/7 quickly. Very efficient.

How would they know though when to give it up? When a woman looks tired? I just don't think it's rude for a man to not give a seat up just because someone is a female. People aren't mind readers so they don't know you have a foot problem or if you are feeling tired/sick/had a long day. Yaknow?
