I'm new to the New York area, just wanted to see if anyone had any job-hunting advice.
I'm searching for a position as a Network Engineer. I'm currently taking a month long review class for the CCNA certification.
I'm a recent college grad with limited work experience (none in my field), so I want to demonstrate potential to an employer before applying. Though I do have a high GPA and have already committed myself to this career path.
I have the option of working for free (internship or mentorship) until I finish this class and earn my certification.
So what's a good way to get an employer's attention here? Randomly send out resumes? Cold call?
My professional network is pretty small since I don't know anyone.
Even if not related to my field, any advice would be appreciated!
It is a good idea to go ahead and email your resume, along with a compelling, but to the point cover letter, and then a follow up call 2 days later if you don't hear back from the company. As I have changed fields 3 times I know what it is to go into a new field with no actual experience in that specific field and having to catch the attention of a new employer and then prove myself in a short time on the job.
Networking in person and online is a great help too of course...you are doing it now actually by posting on this forum. There are other ways as well...you can find networking sites online in your field and post on those forums as well and of course post your resume everywhere you can online - recruiters do look, just try and make it less stepford, in other words see if you can use words that can make your resume pop out..everyone can say they walk...but if you say you walk with a bounce in your step immediately the reader sees you walking even without having met you...get my meaning?
