South Bronx continues its upswing
For those who doubt that the changes are real and the investments are dramatically changing the area, take a look at the latest condos/coops for sale and the prices they are commanding in TODAY's market no less (the low end of the market). The are just some examples of what to expect in the changing market of the South Bronx... Hunts Point: 1014 Faile St, Bronx, NY 10459 | Zillow Real Estate Mott Haven: Kelly St, Bronx, NY 10455 | Zillow Real Estate

That's excellent news for the south Bronx for sure. It's a long-time coming. I hope the recession doesn't swing the pendelum back in the other direction, where it had been for decades.

Great article dude...yeah its amazing the changes that are ocuring despite what is happening in the economy! And by the way...Jose Serrano is an idiot...he wants the name to stay "South Bronx" because "that's its name." The moniker "South Bronx" is in fact a NEW NAME, and was coined in the past 40 years or so to describe the concentration of poverty and confluence of social ills that plague the area. The ACTUAL names of the area are Mott Haven, Melrose, Concourse, etc. But since he has built his career on manipulation of the community and residents to advance his political and financial pursuits...he will work hard to keep the area "unchanged" as this is where his political power lies.

This is great news. Just a reminder that the Bronx Trolley Tour will be operating through the South Bronx next Wednesday evening. It is a great way to "introduce" yourself to all the great things going on in the neighborhood. I went on the October one and had a blast. There were many people up from Manhattan and they had a great time.

Why would someone move there though
It's far/long commute, has a ton of crime, zero diversity, heavy low income, heavy gang presence and severely lacking in amenities (such as grocery stores).
Doesn't sound too flattering.

Nobody is really moving to Mott Haven. It gets no play. The only part of Mott Haven than people move to is the southernmost section, Port Morris (if you consider it MH). Otherwise, low income people are moving from other sections of the Bronx to Mott Haven.
So high crime, widespread poverty, bad schools, high HIV and asthma rates, deteriorated housing (especially by the Deegan), and a plethora of housing projects will keep Mott Haven the way it is for a while. Despite all the "rebuilding" on vacant lots, which is what they really have been doing.

Actually I'd think the commute is one of the things it has going for it...

Here we go again....I'm soooo bored with SuperMario's "The Bronx is horrifying" posts. Consider the source, everyone.
BUT...Kingofthehill - "long commute"?!?! It's ONE STOP into Manhattan. It takes me 15-20 minutes to my job on on 57th Street. It took me longer than that when I lived on the Upper West Side!
