This is just a shot in the dark, but here goes: In a few months i'm going to be moving to a country where my college degrees aren't going to pay the bills (at least for a little while), so I need a more globally applicable skill. I love food and cooking so restaurants seemed like an obvious choice. what's the best way in? going around asking at restaurants hasn't worked. people look at me like i'm nuts or don't want/have time to hear me out. i'd essentially be willing to apprentice for free as long as I think I'm learning something, preferably back of the house, but i'm open to anything. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, they can't let you work for free. Do you have any other job experience because you may have some transferable job skills that can work in the food service industry.

NYC has TONS of job opportunities for this sector, so just keep on pushing along when you get here, and be sure to check out Craigslist.
