Default Astoria/LIC help?! (gym related)

Hi guys/girls:

I moved to Astoria about a month ago (and posted a bit here trying to figure out where to move). I'm settled in, but am missing a gym in my life. My freelance work is sporadic so far, but will probably pick up in the next couple months. However, I don't really want to be paying 70-80 bucks a month if I can help it (NYSCish fees). Can anyone familiar with the area recommend a more affordable gym? I'm not looking for the highest quality place, as I only use free weights, and will run on the treadmill.

I'm also looking for a place to get into an indoor soccer league in the Queens/Brooklyn/Manhattan (ya right?!) area. I've been lazy since I moved, and I need to get back into shape. Suggestions along those lines would be great as well.

Thanks!

There's a gym a few blocks away from me called Matrix Fitness. You can sign up for a year, which makes your monthly payments cheaper, or you can go month by month but pay a little more. I think it was about $50 a month. They also have free classes. I would go to it, but I'm saving for a wedding and a house at the moment. It's on Ditmars blvd, right around 45th st or so. They give you 2 weeks free to try it out.

hahah hi Dave. You could try the gym on Northern Blvd and 38th St. It's called Astoria Sports Complex. 3438 38TH ST (718)729-7163

I think it is cheaper than NYSC. My gym in Astoria was only $15, but I don't think you want to go Lucille Roberts. :-)

Man you love this board Jackie!

I'll check it out. I'm not really sure what's going on with the apt, since Amy's talking about going back to LA when this lease is up. So obviously I'd rather not commit to a local gym for a year when I don't know where I'll be in april!

Thanks for the advice on the Ditmars gym too Rachael. I'll probably check that one out too, especially since they have a free 2 week trial.
