Default NYC Discotheques In The 1970s?

Take a trip down memory lane. For those of you who actually went to the discos in the 1970s please tell us all about it. I'm a younger person who loves disco and funk and want to know what the experience of those discos were like.

You can begin with...And then share some of your memories of the old New York.

Default I was a teen in the 70's...

and I always liked disco. Was there a discoteque on W 48th street in the area of 8th and 9th Ave's?

I recall a place called Xenon on W 43 street but was never in there

Although it seems to be a low-rated movie, I liked 54 (1998) about Studio 54.
I was a decidedly anti-disco as a teenager in the 70's. But I like a good disco tune here and there.

My sister got into Studio 54 when she 16, that tells you something. I don't recall if she liked it or not. But it must have been an experience. She went to Xenon as well, from what I recall it was Studio 54's competition.

For another good movie on the era, Whit Stillman's "Last Days of Disco" captures the mood pretty well. That said, I was not into the disco scene, myself, as those in single digit age ranges were generally not granted admittance, and my parents were not of that lifestyle. And, by the time I turned 10, meeting the requirement for the double-digit age range that seems to have been the minimum requirement, such establishments had been closed.

"My sister got into Studio 54 when she 16, that tells you something." I am not so sure it tells a whole lot. The drinking age was 18 back then, and actually asking any post-pubescent person for identification in NYC was quite rare. Several grammer school graduation parties that I attended served alcohol. The fixation on underage drinking is a recent phenomenon and arose after the drinking age was raised to 19 and then 21. Apparently, it is better to get your kids hooked on crystal meth than let them have a beer or a glass of wine.

I didn't much care for disco, but very much cared for the women that went to the discos. Danceteria ruled.

Personally, I think the drinking age should be 18. But "fixation" on underage drinking? I could say that starting in the 1980's we've had a "fixation" on drunk driving. I'd prefer to say that we're trying to come to our senses.

Who on earth says it's better to get your kids hooked on crystal meth than let them have a beer or glass of wine? Meth is illegal, even for an adult!

BTW it wasn't so much the drinking age I was referring to, but trying to make a joke that Studio 54 had a rep as being very difficult to get into, but not if you were a teenage girl!

I also enjoy watching the movie 54. VH1 did a great special on the 70s music era. Maybe it was the Last Days of Disco or their own thing. It was really good though.

I have gone to the Disco Music site and read some of the reviews. But since we have some native NY'ers on the site who love to talk about old NYC (as do I), I just thought it would be nice to read some experiences of actual members on this site.
