Its almost impossible to compare hood-to-hood because of the different sizes, population, and available statistics. You also have to take into account what percentage of the city is ghetto. Thats why you rarely see a "big city" in the top crime per capita category.

I dont get it.
The Bronx has more people than any of those cities. If I compare those cities, to certain Bronx neighborhoods than the Bronx would actually come out looking worse.
What are you trying to say? I am confused.

What is not to understand. Compare a bad neighborhood in that city to a neighborhood in NYC, in this case a neighborhood in the Bronx. Then you are making fair comparisons. You can take the Bronx and make it into a city as you wish.
Anyway, here are some numbers for the boroughs so far...
New York City-8,331,469
November 2
2007-408--4.92 per 100k
2008-441--5.29 per 100k
Brooklyn-2,542,427
2007-178--7.03 per 100k
2008-173--6.80 per 100k
Queens-2,276,755
2007-60--2.65 per 100k
2008-81--3.56 per 100k
Manhattan-1,639,077
2007-57--3.49 per 100k
2008-58--3.54 per 100k
Bronx-1,381,641
2007-105--7.62 per 100k
2008-112--8.11 per 100k
Staten Island-491,569
2007-8---1.64 per 100k
2008-17--3.46 per 100k

The Bronx looks kind of safe if you compare it to some of those cities, I guess. But is just not right to do that. If you have the time to do more research, take your neighborhood numbers and then compare it to some of the worst neighboorhoods in Miami (for example) and see how safe your neighborhood is. I dont have the time to do that. I am sure your neighborhood (for every 100,000 people number) is much safer than living in 'ghettos' in those cities. Ok.

My immediate area , 2 blocks by 2 blocks had a murder rate of 16 per 100,000 last year.
And NYC is low on murders. But compare the assaults, robberies, and rapes with other cities and they come out neck and neck. Hunts Point was actually worse than Newarks worst neighborhood in everything but homicides.
But nice find.

The West Side of Chicago has neighborhoods with homicide rates over 30 per 100k a year. I really doubt there are any neighborhoods in NYC with crime rates higher than Garfield Park or Austin in Chicago. In the year 2000, there were four west side neighborhoods in Chicago with a murder rate over 50 per 100k. Find the worst neighborhood in 1992 in NYC, and you *might* find a rate that high. Areas like Harlem, Bed Stuy, and the South Bronx have robbery rates around 400-500 per 100k... yet even the most sought Chicago neighborhoods, like Lincoln Park, have robbery rates over 300 per 100k. The bad neighborhoods have rates around 1000 per 100k.

In 1990, the bronx had about 55 murders per 100K. Break it down by neighborhood and its much higher. Same year nyc was #1 in robberies for big cities with manhattan leading the way with 1800 per 100K, brooklyn with 1600, bronx with 1500. Good thing though murders have dropped significantly in both chicago and new york as compared to the 80's and 90's. Hopefully crime continues to improve in both cities.

"Might" find a rate that high? Im sorry, Chicago had nothing on the worst NYC neighborhoods back in the day.
For 1990 murder rates:
Hunts Point : 112 per 100,000
Central Harlem : 108 per 100,000
Morrisania : 94 homicides per 100,000
Mott Haven : 93 homicides per 100,000
Bushwick : 75 homicides per 100,000
Highbridge : 74 homicides per 100,000
Brownsville : 71 homicides per 100,000
Bed-Stuy : 70 homicides per 100,000
Morris Heights : 69 homicides per 100,000
East NY : 68 homicides per 100,000
West Harlem : 65 homicides per 100,000
East Tremont : 63 homicides per 100,000
Flatbush : 61 homicides per 100,000
East Harlem : 60 homicides per 100,000
Washington Heights : 55 homicides per 100,000
I didn't even do robbery rates but NYC had THE highest robbery rates of any big city back in the early 1990's. SO I wont even bother to post that.
Nowadays you may find murder rates in the 20's in the worst neighborhoods but dont try to undermine how bad NYC was back in the days. It was putrid.
With this list, I didn't even include lower Manhattan (Lower East Side) or Queens (Far Rockaway, Southside), but I think you get the point.
