Where do NYC'ers do their discount shopping....
Sorry to ask but I could not find an answer in my search. My husband is in NYC staying off of 37th and Third. He is going to be there (in an apartment) for up to a year..maybe more. Where do NYC'ers go to do their "bulk discount shopping". I am talking about Wal-Mart, Target..or other similiar chains. He won't have a car and will have to take public transportation. He has a roller bag to carry things. Please any input would be helpful. I am going up there and will have to help set up the apartment.
Any sage advice is appreciated. Thank you
P.S. We realize that there is not a Wal-Mart, Target etc..in NYC.

100 14th St
Jersey City, NJ 07310 (Jersey City)
139 Flatbush Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11217 (Atlantic Terminal)
Those are the two that are showing on Target's website closest to hubby. I am trying to also reasearch on the MTA website..just am not sure about how to get over to NJ.
Thanks

Actually, there are some Targets in the city limits, but no Wal-Marts. Target of Riverdale (which is actually in Marble Hill) is located on W225th off Broadway, which is right near the 1 subway line and MetroNorth train to Marble Hill. This might be an easier trek from Manhattan than going out to Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn or to Queens, simply because you can take the MetroNorth train as opposed to the subway. On a weekend, you can get a city ticket from Grand Central for $3.25 each way, and it can be easier with bulky items or a heavy bag to travel on the train as opposed to the subway. Target also has locations in closer-in New Jersey locales as well.
K-Mart also has a presence in NYC as well, including not far from his apartment. There's a K-Mart on W34th between 7th and 8th, a block from Macy's. There's also another K-Mart on Broadway & 9th as well as others in Queens and Jersey City.
If you need a Wal-Mart, for soemthing specific that they sell, there is one in White Plains that is a few blocks from the MetroNorth train station.

To get to New Jersey, it's NJTransit train or PATH train, depending upon where you want to go from Penn Station in Manhattan. The other option is a bus from the Port Authority terminal in Manhattan.

I've shopped at the 34th Street KMart many MANY times and can highly recommend it for discount items.

You're welcome. Yes, there is a slight difference. New York City's rate is 8.375 and New Jersey's is 7 in most areas, I believe, 3.5 state and 3.5 locality tax. Suburban rates are a little less in NY, with White Plains running 7.88.
