No, I'd steer clear of Manhattan completely on that drive, and would stay with the Turnpike to Elizabeth to the Goethals or the Outerbridge Crossing, depending upon where in SI one needed to go.

The other issue with much of the part of NJ that's near Suffern and not too bad to SI, well shorter than Suffern, is that it can tend to get expensive, especially when you have places with land. Schools, however, are the most important issue in determining where to live in NJ, and the house is secondary, because some of the systems are just awful.
