I need to move. I just moved here 3 months ago and I am currently renting a room on w 110 st and I hate it. It is 600 dollars and I live with someone who cannot flush the toilet. When I dreamed of Manhattan I, like everyone else dreamed of nice big loft spaces for a reasonable price. Well I know that is not possible here, but i am willing to go as far as 20-30 min outside of Manhattan and I was wondering if it is reasonable to look for 700-900 sq ft apartment for under $1000. I don't want a neighborhood where I will get shot, or robbed. Just a nice big space. If you know any areas where I should look please tell me.

Thank you. i want to move as soon as possible.
It's a tough call. Maybe Astoria in Queens or Mott Haven in the Bronx.
The square footage and rent requirement make it a little tough. You may have to keep flushing for a while until you find the required parameters in a safe, decent area.

I think Mott Haven is a little too rough.
Even though Wash Heights and Inwood aren't all that safe, I'd recommend them over Mott Haven.
I would agree with Queens as being the best bet for your situation, since closer-in Brooklyn will tend to be more expensive. I agree that you're not priced out of Astoria, but it will not be the largest or most glamorous apartment. Also check into Kew Gardens and Rego Park, which are roughly 30 or so minutes from Manhattan on the subway. You could also find something in Bayside, but the trip to Manhattan would be longer, save for an express LIRR train.
Price-wise, I think you might do better in Washington Heights than Astoria. Long Island City, which is also loaded with former industrial buildings that get converted to lofts, might also be worth considering...and it's closer to Manhattan than Astoria, too.
Thank you so much for all of your help!!!! I am going to see some places tomorrow so I will check in with everyone and tell you how the search is going. !!!

Do people seriously come to New York not realizing that real estate is really expensive? I thought this was pretty well known.
