Default What kind of industries are in NYC?

I'm posting this because I saw a similar thread that was posted with a similar questions but all the replys were reasons why not to live in NYC. Well I grew up in NYC and my family is there so I don't need to hear that mumbo jumbo.

But I'm finishing up my last semester of college and have been a automobile mechanic for 5 years and also have engineering technician, autocad drafter and bookkeeping experience.

What industries are strong in NYC right now?

quite a few food processing plants and very small oems who make specialty items used by larger out of state manufacturers... we have lost most of the manufacturing base here thru the years. i actually work in the industrial electric supply business here in new york and factory automation is our specialty

The Times did a piece about how shoe cobblers are doing really well right now because people (especially women) are getting their shoes repaired instead of buying new ones during the financial downturn. New Yorkers walk a lot, so they tear up their shoes.

Also, companies that clean out foreclosed houses are growing.

We've also got an absolute ton of civil service jobs (which I mention as a former toiler in the private sector who has found a new employment home--and an eminently superior one, at that).
