Do you think that Puerto Rican in P.R. are rich? even you said they were poor. And I dont hate Nuyoricans, I do hate the stereotype.
Also I havent said all nuyorican are bad or criminals...
But some are.
Nuyorican are only deserving of respect if they are good and decent people. Like I have said, some are and some arent.
First off, there are criminals in PR, plenty of them, just like there are criminals here so again I dont see your point.

Can you give a source for this 10% college number for Nuyoricans? I'd love to see something recent and reliable.

Anyway, guess what the difference is between PRs from the Island and PRs from NYC? Yup, the ANGLO CULTURE. The people on the Island are not viewed as second class citizens as they are here. Here yall are looked down upon by a broad swath of society. In PR, obviously you dont run up against that.

Rap music is a different culture in itself. There are people of many backgrounds that listen to rap music. it doesn't have a color stamped on it imo...there are plenty of white kids that listen to it as well.
Listen is one thing, that doesnt mean is part of the culture..
Like if an american would love Salsa, that doesnt mean he is Cuban or Puerto Rican,
Or if a Puerto Rican would love Merengue, that doesnt mean he is Dominicano.

Quelinda I actually think the number is substantially lower for Nuyoricans in college than the national number. I have come across these stats before. There was a study on the different ethnic groups in the city that came out about 3 to 4 years ago. That's the one I was referring to before when I said the numbers were discouraging. If I dig I can find it...

I hung out almost exclusively with blacks for about a decade, and then around the same amount of time with Puerto Ricans, and believe me from an outsider's (white girl's) point of view, they are VERY different. Though from the outside looking in, apparently from this thread, people think they're the same..
Nobody said that, you are jumping to conclusion, I said they mix back in the days and today.
Also since you are attack crisp444, for voting republican when he actually didn't(and when did republican became a bad word? of an insult?)
I would like you to know that I am a republican(not only a republican but I am an active member here in NYC and National.), so now you can direct all the attacks to me if you want to.(fiscal conservative, not much Social conservative)

I surely do believe that, we are an inner city environment so of course that will be the case. However, I am positive that this would apply across other ethnic groups who grow up in the inner city ghetto. For example, African-Americans growing up in NYC are probably also going to college in lower numbers than their counterparts in the rest of the country. So yes, I dont find it objectionable that the OP finds the PR population in the inner city in a bad situation as compared to the rest of the country, but I am positive that the PR people in the city are doing no worse than other ethnic groups living in the inner city hood (poor neighborhoods/projects), except maybe Asians.

I read that the Dominicans also do much better than Puerto Ricans in NYC and they tend to live in poor neighborhoods. I have to find that article.

You just gave it before, and not nuyoricans all Puerto Ricans in the US, I would think is even lower in NYC.
You used the same numbers, can i use them also?
What?? so in P.R. we have 24% college graduates almost the same of whites in the US, and that is because we are all latinos??
Ok, so you think that P.R. is racist free?
In the US is even easier for nuyorican to go to school since they have to have a % of blacks and latinos in their student body(In P.R. that requirement is waved). And getting into college is easier for latinos compared to whites, and even harder for Asians.
Oh, and I went to a US school, just in case, so now is only looked down upon nuyoricans only and not Puerto Ricans??

General comment: This is a broader issue of the origins of poverty and how to get out of it. This is unfortunately NOT unique to Puerto Ricans.
Ok, fair enough. But WHY is the mother 18 and on drugs? WHY is the family living in the projects? One must be able to understand the difference between reasons and excuses. There is really no excuse for being 18, having kids out of wedlock, not going to work, and abusing drugs. THAT is an excuse. Living in a bad, poor neighborhood? That is a bit different, but it does take determiniation and desire to want to leave the ghetto and better one's self. Nobody is going to come kocking down your door with a job and great opportunities. YOU must look for those opportunities. What is the difference between those who live in that envirnoment and do better for themselves and those who perpetuate the cycle? I mean, there are even differences in families where one sibling does exactly what his parents do yet another goes to college and succeeds. YOU must decide that, not society.
