Default Average Living Expenses

Hi All! I will be moving to NYC in June to begin working (finance industry) after graduation. I will be making $60k and my boyfriend expects to make $35-45k. We are thinking of a studio or small 1 BR - maybe midtown, gramercy, financial dist, or brooklyn heights areas. We wouldn't be against sharing with roommates to get costs down too.

Any thoughts on if this sounds reasonable? Or more specific suggestions on areas to live in? I was in NYC all summer for an internship so I'm familiar with the areas.

Also, what can we expect in terms of typical monthly expenses (cable, electric, renter's insurance, groceries, etc...?)

Thanks in advance for your help!

its a hard question to answer as everyone has a different lifestyle and expense level... id say with 100k income you would live nicely in any of the boroughs except manhattan based on my budgeting but we dont know any of your expenses . car payments? health insurance? school loans, credit card debt etc....... . manhattan can be a killer depending where you live and what you do in your spare time and whether you have to pay to park a car. you really cant go by any of our answers. id have to say for myself ,no i couldnt do it in manhattan on 100k before taxes but thats us. we are very active in alot of hobbies, we believe in saving and investing heavily for a nice early retirement and try to leave quite a bit of slack in our budgeting for non living expenses, but im sure quite a few people do it. the question is if one of you looses a job or is sick for an extended period can you do it? some people will pump every penny they earn into a lifestyle they really cant afford long term but thats not us...theres always tooooo much month at the end of the money when you push things to the limit of your income .. i dont think there is an answer anyone can give you that would be your situation
