Default Miles...

Wow. That must be a really demanding and challenging job. Being a social worker is tough let alone a psychiatric one.**IT sure is on both counts**

Out of curiosity, what are the academic requirements to do that? Does one need a degree in social work plus some graduate training in psychiatry?

**I have a BA in psychology and got a Masters in Social Work(MSW) in 1990 and have been at the same agency since i got my degree. A few months at the job i took the licensing exam for the Certified Social Worker(CSW) and got the license. In 2004 the licensing title changed to licensed master of social work (LMSW). These days the LMSW isn't as well recognized as the licensed clinical social worker(LCSW) which involves an x number of years both in an agency setting and also a certain number of hours under the supervision of an individual with the lcsw and in some cases makes you an insurance reimbursable provider. if you want to have a private practice for a special discipline such as psychoanalysis you have to get the appropriate credential for that

if you have any more question you can ask just that i don't know how much more to add

Hmm..I want to have $5 million in the bank, and I want to spend my days and nights on a tropical island lounging on the beach, surfing, inhaling coronas, and being free to do whatever whenever, with no worries. I am working on it!

rlrl, I know how you must feel at your job. I feel like I'm a psychiatric counselor when I'm teaching lol. I feel like half the time i'm trying to counsel these kids along with teaching them. Just found out there's been 150 incident reports of the kids attacking teachers so far this year (out of about 100 teachers, in a k-5 school). A lot of those kids could use your counseling!

Wow! Stay safe, Rachael. Sorry you have to be out there doing what should be a normal, noble occupational pursuit without fear or danger.

Luckily nothing has happened to me last year and this year. I have a couple violent kids, but nothing serious has happened (knock on wood).

Would you consider switching careers if you felt you were exposing yourself to unnecessary risks? How about when you get married and move to Long Island, perhaps the public schools there will be much better - at least on the elementary level?
