hotel help
we are visiting in March, I have been online looking for hotels.
I guess I want a miracle. I want to stay at a place that is not a "bad area" (for lack of a better word) but also won't bankrupt me. Any suggestions?

My son and I stayed at the Hotel Newton back in 1996. It's more expensive now, but still (just barely) under $200/night -- and it's in a relatively good area. It's on Broadway, so there's easy access to the subway as well as buses.

Try for a place like the Doubletree Times Square. They're on Broadway, in the heart of the Theatre District, and I believe their rates start around $180. Book early, however, with any hotel, to get the lowest price.
Midtown hotels offer the most convenience for going just about anywhere in the city. And, at certain times of the year, it's hard to find your price point, but March is not generally that bad. Try a site like orbitz.com, hotwire.com, or expedia.com to get some good recommendations on properties.

I stayed at the Grand Hyatt on 42nd street in 2004 and I liked it. My only complaint was the bathroom doorknob didn't work right, but everything else was nice. It's right next door to Grand Central Station so it's very convenient to everything.

The Grand Hyatt is NOT cheap. We put our visiting VIPs there for work, and with our corporate discount it's $229/night.

I honestly don't remember how much it was, it was part of a package deal.

If you really want to go cheap (like motel quality) I'm sitting in Hotel Alexander on the UWS as I write this. It's very basic and definitely not luxury but it's clean and cheap. I paid $185 for a room for this Saturday and Sunday night (total). Can't beat that if you don't plan to spend much time at the hotel. It's right near Broadway and a few long blocks to the park. If you want something nicer, though, you will probably have to start at double that. It's the main reason I am dealing with the cheap bed
