Brian Cashman has been the Yankees GM for 10 yrs now, that must be a record under the Steinbrenner era. Anyway the Yankees aren't going to win the World Series in 2009,just like George would say "And you can bet the house on that!"

And this is exactly what I take issue with: if we paid teachers more, the best and brightest would CHOOSE to teach. And we'd have teachers about whom we could brag, instead of shrugging and saying that teachers 'are really nothing special.'

So you believe that only the children of those who can afford it should have a decent education?

1) Then why with all these high paid stars the Yankees did not deliver? Why in all sports the winners aren't necessary the team with the highest paid players?
2) If they have that much money to burn, why ask the city for help?

Because the City benefits from the Yankees having a new stadium. Remember when they threaten to build the new stadium to NJ and the City did everything possible to convince them to stay in NY? Why? Because if they don't, the city loses revenue from their business.
The new stadium construction has sparked gentrification in that area of the Bronx and improved the quality of the community. A new mall is going up, new metro north station, new condo and co-ops going up, the court house plaza was renovated as well as parks are being renovated, etc.
The new yankee stadium construction is why all of this is happening. If there was no construction, all those improvement wouldnt exist and that area would still be crappy.

Nobody should be surprised at what the Yankees have done. If you go back over the newspapers for the last 35 years (since George Steinbrenner bought the team after the 1972 season) you'll see that the Yankee franchise has been run according one one guiding principle above all others--and it has nothing to do with winning World Series:
Upstage the Mets whenever possible. The Yanks are still smarting from the fact that the Mets signed Johan Santana last year. Then last month, after they signed Francisco Rodriguez, it was an absolute given that the Yankees were going to sign CC Sabathia--no matter how much money he demanded. For any other team to even consider tying up $423 million in three players--two of whom are pitchers, who don't even play every day--is sheer unadulterated insanity. For the team in The Bronx, it's standard operating procedure.
And I agree with Viralmd: teachers are more important than professional athletes in a real sense. Though, obviously, they don't get anything like the recognition they deserve.
