Thanks for the replies everyone, I really appreciate the suggestions and steering me in the right direction. One more question. For my price range of around $4200 a month what type of apartment will I be looking at in these areas. Will it be pretty nice? (hardwood floors, nice kitchen, good views, doorman, etc.) Thanks again.

I don't know if you've seen many NYC apartments, but the kitchens are generally EXTREMELY small, as are the bathrooms. VERY SMALL. MINUTE. You might have hardwood floors, but the floors need to be at least 80% covered in carpeting to prevent noise transmission to the apartment below. Most apartments won't have a washer or dryer, but in larger buildings there will be a laundry room in the basement.

You'll likely have a doorman, and other building staff, including the superintendent.
