Default It describes

a Northwest Boeing 727 that plunged 18,000 feet near Yonkers, NY after the crew failed to turn on the "pitot heat switch" during the pre-take off check

it gives no date (as do the other tragedies) and is listed chronologically justbefore the Northwest Airlines flight 255 that crashed in Romulus Michigan on 8/16/87

The flight may have plunged near Yonkers, but it crashed at Stony Point. It was a flight that left from JFK to Buffalo. Northwest Orient #6231. It seems that the facts were not checked too well in the disaster book, since they claim that it's Yonkers, when it's really a good distance away in Rockland County.

On the same date, December 1st, 1974, another plane crashed in snow on approach to Dulles Airport in Virginia, crashing into Mount Weather, which is FEMA's operations center, a hollowed-out mountain near Washington, DC.

Here's some information on Northwest disasters from Wikipedia: Northwest Airlines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roger Wilcox is on a distinguished road
The NTSB site posted by Wheelsup shows a fatal crash September 20, 1989 in FLUSHING, NY (aka La Guardia) involving a US Air 737 that went off the end of the runway into the water. Two people died. Similar, but not quite the same thing as the recent crash, as the 1989 flight never really took off. See DCA89MA074. Would be interesting to see if this was truly "the first successful ditching" (meaning airborne flight landing on water with no fatalities"?). Some network expert probably on the NBC nightly news claimed this post "Miracle on the Hudson".

The 1989 Usair crash was much different than the 2008 LGA water ditching. The 1989 incident was an aborted takeoff after V1 with a mechanical failure of the rudder. The plane could not stop in time and skidded off the end of the runway into flushing bay. The 737 never rotated or left the ground.
