Default Australian guy moving to NYC.

Hey guys, I'm a 23 year old guy living in Brisbane, Australia. I moved here from the UK with my parents when I was 13 and ever since I was young I have always wanted to experience living in New York. I have a law degree and have done my masters, and I think now I am ready for life in New York City. I think the best area for me is Brooklyn as it seems the most affordable, though I have read some negative comments so I'm quite puzzled as to if that would be a good choice. I will be working as a real estate attorney, so which areas give the best salary and the most reasonable rent. I have no idea how much I would spend on rent as I don't know where I will be working for the best salary, commute etc. I basically need to know:

Which areas are the best to work in.

Which areas/surrounding cities are best i.e for rent to match the average salary for the area I will be working in and safety etc.

Do New Yorkers tend to welcome British/Australian people.

And finally, I am only planning on living in New York for a year or two, as I love to travel and feel that I will regret it if I don't experience life in New York before I retire, so ideally I will be looking for a working vacation visa for 1-2 yrs which will allow me to live and work there without becoming a US resident. How long will this process take?

I know I have a lot to ask and sound quite stupid but I really have no idea where to start!

Thanks, Liam.

Start by getting a legal visa for working. You cannot work on a tourist visa, which is good for three months. Especially as an attorney, which means that you have to pass the NY State Bar and get licensure in the US, for which you have to provide documentation. Get caught and you won't be permitted back into the US.

Not as easy as getting a visa for working in the UK, I'm afraid. There is no easy 1 or 2 year working holiday visa as far as I know, but this isn't a bad way to get legal working status for 6 months:

Work America - Ideal for university students that want to spend a fun and skill-enhancing summer in the USA!
