Where to live?
Hi, my family and I will be moving to NYC in the near future and would appreciate some suggestion on a suitable neighborhood with decent schools and not a crazy commute (hmm, sounds like what everyone wants).
We're looking for a little bit of space, don't need acres or even one acre, but enough space for the kids to run around. Quiet but not overly far from the necessitites (10-15 min drive). I'll be working in midtown.
I know housing prices are going down, but parts of the NYC metro area are still way too expensive for us. We're looking for a place at less than $500K. I don't mind a long, but consistent commute. Of course, good school are important.
Thanks!
I've been reading other posts and looking up other areas people have mentioned - never hurts to learn about as many as possible.

You may want to consider Suffolk county in Long Island. Towns like Huntington and Commack have nice houses for under or around $500K and you can probably get about a .25 acre of land for the kids. The schools in those towns are also pretty good. Traffic in Suffolk is not as bad as Nassau so you can drive anywhere pretty easily and you can take the LIRR to midtown, which will take about an hour.

You'd be better off posting this on the Westchester or NJ boards. Or even Connecticut.

Houses at Jamaica Estates, and Jamaica Hills are around 500k range. However, prices are going to drop, because St. Johns are building new dorms, and everyone is moving out. So, I'd suggest Jamaica Estates, and the commute to Manhattan is about 45 mins.

Actually it takes much longer than 45 minutes. And Jamaica Estates, depending on where, can be a LONG way from the 179th St station (which is also the end of the line).

True. However, after Kew Gardens stop (Manhattan bound), F line runs express throughout Queens.

Thanks, I will look into those towns. I have heard of Huntington; someone had told me that it actually has a town atmosphere and that some people can walk to shops, the library, and other establishments. Is this true? Is it busy all the time or more like a small town?

Yup, it has some commercialized areas where there is shopping and plenty of restaurants too. Depending on where you are, some places are in walking distance, but keep in mind that Long Island is still suburban living so a car if a definite must.
Also, Huntington itself is a really nice area - but some neighboring areas are not as nice and share a similar name (i.e. Huntington Station). The nicer area is in the Half Hollow Hills school district (SD #5).
If you have specific questions about the area, you can post in the Long Island section.
