It's always good for an artist to have sufficient supplies. One doesn't look good if one runs out of tools in the middle of one's works of art.
I once posed for a beautiful young female artist and each sitting required one whole hour as she splashed away on her canvas. One day, to my chagrin, she ran out of paint halfway through the portrait and told me to sit still in that position while she ran downstairs to replenish her supplies.
Turned out she couldn't find any paint, etc., nearby and ended up at Lee's on West 57 Street. It took her two hours to get there and back to her studio where I was waiting in my set position for her imminent return.
I was fuming mad as it's not easy being in the buff in a studio for two hours with a creaking radiator that made more noise than it generated heat.
Moral of Story: As an artist be sure to know where to replenish your supplies and have enough on hand before starting a job.

I think the moral of that story is to get up and put some clothes on if you are cold!

Thanks so much, Henna, for offering a perspective on the matter.
See, many artists doing a portrait get upset if the subject should move out of position as they prefer to halt the day's work themselves. I guess it's a matter of continuity and shifting one's position affects the flow of the creative spirit at work. Hence, I preferred to be the sacrificial lamb and shiver for the sake of art - perhaps because I too follow a creative pursuit, I quite understood the need not to get out of position.
Nevertheless, the moral does address the OP's thread as it endorses the need to have a sufficient readily available stock of supplies for the budding NYC artist. Location of those stores/supplies is indeed important.
