Why do people who aren't from NYC want to live here so badly? (New York: real estate, how much)

My husband and I are retiring to NYC (brooklyn actually) from the suburbs in Fl. I didn't want to end up like my dad in his 'golden years' stuck in a hot box in the middle of a golf course without the ability to drive. You know you have to drive to get milk or a paper or a cup of coffee in Florida. Even if there was something close - its too hot and humid to walk to.
Also we chose NYC because we were afraid of getting bored. I did not choose NYC to party or make it 'big' or any of those reasons.
Your example is exactly why someone should move to NYC. You are established, have a realistic view of what NYC is really like and aren't trying to emulate a movie or TV show. I think people who share your views will really enjoy it here, it's the people that are on cloud 9 and think manhattan is this magical place for everyone who lives here are in for a reality check. Good lick with your move, NYC welcomes you!
People want to live in New York City for many reasons.....
* NYC is the most urban city in America, second most in the world behind Tokyo.
* NYC is interchangeable with London as the most important city/financial capital of the world
* NYC is filled with history, which dates back to the early 1600s
* NYC has the best nightlife in the United States, possibly the world
* NYC is a melting pot with culture from all over the world.
* NYC has one of the top 5 best subway systems in the world
* NYC has The Chrysler Building, The Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Empire State Building, Broadway, Wall Street, United Nations headquarters and Central Park
* NYC has the second most massive skyline in the world behind Hong Kong, but possibly still the best
* NYC is one of the fashion capitals in the world
Also, songs like this make people want to live in NYC!
I've seen a couple of threads on here with people who are from out of town who want to live in NYC so much. Let me tell you Manhattan is full of people who are not really in fact New Yorkers. Tourists, Transplants, and stupid people with money. And once you've been in New York for a decent amount of time its just like anywhere else its what your used to. I mean it'll always be my home and I wouldn't live anywhere else but its not exactly like the streets are paved with gold.
People want to live here because they hear from other people the multitude of choices we have. One does not miss NYC until one has lived in other places that lack the multitude of choices we take for granted. Case in point: I just came back from an extended vacation to some southern states, and the lack of things that we take for granted here on a daily basis can be devastating on the mind, once they are not available, i.e., good food, book emporiums, the theatre, museums, etc.
Everything in the world that one can want or need, it is found in NYC! Take a trip to the Flower District in Manhattan, with flowers from all over the world.........................
How is it that anyone could believe that what I see on TV is THE reason I want to move to New York City?! I could see the point if we're discussing six year olds and I agree that is probably the reason for some folks. But the majority of us have brains and use them. TV is the reason I knew New York existed but reality is the reason I want to move to NYC. In fact, if I'd based my decision on TV alone...I wouldn't want to move. In fact, the general reaction around here when I say I want to move there is horror. Safety, high cost of living, tiny apartments...the list goes on and on. My mom's main objection was the high rate of crime. Thankfully, I've done my own research and was able to tell her that NYC is safer than her city. lol And I've found that although, apartments are small, they are not tiny. Actually, just the statement that "if you can make there, you can make it anywhere" is a turnoff. To me it sounds like NYC is a tough place to live where I'll struggle ever waking moment just to make ends meet...and who really, seriously, deep down inside WANTS to struggle to make a living? Come to think of it, that's generally the NYC I see portrayed on TV. No, my reasons for wanting to move there have nothing to do with TV. The fact that I HATE driving, LOVE the idea of being able to do almost anything I want at anytime of the day, and can live my life on my own terms while basically being ignored by the people around me are three of the main reasons I want to move to NYC. There's also the job opportunities. During a visit there, I was in Sbarro chatting with the owner. I told him I wanted to move but needed to find a job first and he offered me one. Right then and there! That will absolutely NEVER happen in my town...unless your folks pratically run the town or made a huge donation to the hospital or school. Manhattan is my choice because it's the only borough I know of where I can't get lost (I could kiss whoever came up with that grid). After reading some of the posts on this forum, it also seem to be the best one to live without a car. I could list a thousand reasons why I want to move to NYC but that would probably get me thrown off this forum so I won't. But I can promise you that none of them are based on what I've seen on TV.
I think I do understand the OP. I'm from Amsterdam (Holland) and many people would like to live here, especially youngsters, really don't know why; it's just another city.
But I'm dying to see NY!!!

Exactly! I use to live in Atlanta for 3 years and it was crap. I went to L.A for a while crap. It's not that NY is the best thing EVER. . . But in America it pretty much is.
A lot of people love NYC internationally as well. . . It's one of the Fashion capitals, it's the Financial Capital and we have art, culture and scenes that can never be replaced or duplicated.

I admire the fact that you don't have the idea of moving here to live like a rockstar, but unfortunately, a lot of people do struggle here to make ends meet, that is not just on TV or in the movies. Nobody wants to struggle, but people will put up with it just to live here, so don't think for a minute that most people are here because they are living comfortably. I think that's great that you were offered a job at Sbarro, but you are not affording anywhere in NYC on a Sbarro salary unless you are in a horrible neighborhood or you have 3 roommates in a 1 bedroom apartment. Come here if that is your wish, but find a better job than Sbarro if you want the Manhattan experience.

Didn't mean to give the impression that I believed a job at Sbarro would give me a good salary. But as a person with excellent computer and clerical skills (yep, tooting my own horn) who moved back to Grenada, MS (to raise my child) and applied EVERYWHERE for a job but was immediately turned down for every fast food and cashier position because I was overqualified (the managers' words, not mine), I have a special appreciation for the job offer. McDonald's salary won't cut it here, but can you imagine not having a dime to your name but still being turned down for jobs simply because you can type? Let me tell you, the little bit of money I would have made flipping burgers was better to me than the lint I had in my pocket. But as it was explained to me, I was not a good hire simply because I had the skills and training to get a better job. In fact, a couple of times I was told flatout that I was "office" material and that evidently I'd get an office job and leave. No one wanted to hire me knowing that I would get an office job as soon as one became available. No, I didn't plan on working at Sbarro's forever. I have savings that I can use, but the job would have at least given me some extra money until I could find a better position. And the fact that the manager at Sbarro's knew I would be looking for a better position and didn't care was music to my ears. I just used that as an example of how easy it can be to get a job in NYC as opposed to small towns like mine. That's one of the reasons I love your city. And as for people struggling to make ends meet...that's everywhere including my town. I'm 38, not 17 (anymore), so I do realize that everyone is not living as well as they wish. My point was that I can't imagine anyone moving there knowing they will have to struggle everyday for the rest of their lives. I believe that most are like me...knowing it'll be a struggle at first but believing at some point, even if it's 10 years later, that it will pay off in the end. Don't get me wrong, I know that it will not work that way for all of us who move, but if I didn't believe that eventually I could live decently, what would be the point of moving? And just for the record, I wasn't dissing 17 year olds, before anybody gets stirred up...I was comparing myself now to myself then.
Why do people want to live in NYC?
It's pretty simple: some people like living in cities, and NYC is the greatest and biggest one of them all.
Crowds, dirty public spaces, and high costs of living are traits that every city shares. So someone might think to themselves, "why put up with the crowds, crime, high prices, pollution, etc. in LA or Chicago when I could put up with those same things but also live in one of the greatest cities in the world with the most diversity and best public transportation system?"
Really? are you sure? New Yorkers view often tend to be so myopic - they don't see anything beyond the 11th ave.
fyi, there is a handful of cities in the world BIGGER than NYC. And you obviously are not familiar with the transportation system in other large/larger cities.
