A friend of mine from Sicily could tell which part of Sicily someone was from by their accent. I think many countries are like this, not just the dialect but a distinct accent by region or village.
Some people from NJ think they have Brooklyn accents. I laugh at that. I tell them, I lived a mile from the Brooklyn border and I don't even have one. I think Brooklyn accents are strictly limited to THAT borough; hence the name BROOKLYN accents lol.
not every person born in NYC has an accent. i am the 3rd generation and my mom taught me to speak more proper. i also grew up in a diverse neighborhood- not just white people, which makes a huge difference. That is why Staten Island has the strongest accent- its the least diverse. Believe me- the Brooklyn accent is very much dying.
I never realized I had an accent until I left New York for awhile, I was raised on Staten Island and my family is from brooklyn, like most people, Staten Islanders I think speak similar to people from southern brooklyn, but a little less strong among the younger ones. And as some others pointed out, you cant find people with accents like that in Manhattan easily because almost everybody is not a New York person. This is why it has bled into Jersey, LI,and so on.
I think nowadays the younger people do not talk as heavy as the parents, but it is still very distinct next to others in the US.
Yea the accent is dying in the boroughs...but it's still noticeable in Long Island, Staten Island, and Jersey...I agree with Fred that BX and BK have an almost identical accent. Harlemites have an accent too. As for Queens...isn't Fran Drescher (sp) from Queens...she has a very classic NY accent.
The accents are along ethnic and geographic line. Fran has the working class Jewish accent found in Brooklyn/Queens.
Here is a old upper class Manhattan accent which is just about dead; you can really hear if this guy was to say dirty. It is completely different than the Brooklyn accent which was more of a working class Catholic accent. Brooklyn and New York were two different cities only a hundred years ago or so.
