Default Crime is down yet again in the Bronx and NYC

Since so many people keep pushing the fear mongering and misinformation that crime in the city is going up, and that somehow we are reverting back to the 70s and 80s and the world is gonna end..here are the ACTUAL FACTS: "Just about every major crime category in the Bronx, except for a blip in felony robberies, saw fewer incidents reported, with an overall drop of 3.12% in the seven major crime categories, nearly matching a citywide drop of 3.34%." And for the Bronx specifically: "The Bronx crime numbers for all the categories pale in comparison to previous years. Take, for example, murders, which have dropped 19% since 2001 and a whopping 73% since 1993 in the heat of the crack epidemic, with gangs fighting for sales turf." So I ask AGAIN, why do people keep spreading the idea that things are getting worse when overall crime CONTINUES TO FALL? Know the fact...and don't believe the hype people. Boro's major crime stats fall in '08

But, but... I heard there were two break-ins in my neighborhood this year, and I heard of only one the year before. My anecdotal evidence shows that crime has doubled in my neighborhood!! Your stats must be wrong because the police are now under political pressure to lie, whereas last year they weren't!!

Hehe...exactly Henna...its alot more fun/scary to talk about the world coming to an end, and the big bad 70s returning...but the reality is far from that! The city continues to get better and safer, with quality of life improving in leaps and bounds across the board. But hey...some people can only see the negative in life..and thats how they choose to live. That's fine..but that's not reality for everyone else..NYC and the Bronx are safer than they have been in the past 45+ years...and getting better.

If more people actually read the stats instead of the flashy headlines from the newspapers (who are just trying to sell papers), we would not have so many threads claiming the world is ending.

Some say it's cause Rudy & Bloomby put more gendarmes on the streets.

Some say it's a side-effect of declining birth-rate / increased abortions.

But I say... Thank you, Guitar Hero!

Guitar Hero - keeping kids off the street since Christmas 2005!

LOL...I didn't know that Activision was involved in decreasing crime. That's a good one!

Very true. I've noticed more kids staying home or going to someone else's place to play Guitar Hero instead of hanging out to the block and causing trouble.

Compstat. I'll buy that homicides are down because it's pretty hard to hide a dead body in the statistics. But for many of the others, the drop in "major" crimes is pretty meaningless unless you can also point to a drop in the corresponding "minor" crimes. Robbery (a felony) turned to petit larceny and harassment (misdemeanors)... assaults (felony) also turned to harassment (misdemeanor). I'm not saying crime is as bad as it once was, by any means, but don't believe everything you read with these statistics.
