Next week its April, and before you know its summer in NYC. Is the NYC area a threat to Hurricanes, Tropical Storms, etc? How often do we get hurricanes (majors included)? When does the Hurricanes season starts in NYC?

Are you guys ready for this Hurricane season? Do you think this year will be an active "hurricane" season? Do you think hurricanes will come this year to NYC? Thanks

Default Hurricanes

NYC is as susceptible to hurricanes as anywhere else on the east coast, except for maybe Florida. Usually the parts of the city most effected by them are along the coastline, the Rockaways, Coney Island/Seagate and Staten Island, obviously.

I was quite surprised when I saw an illustration last year when it was hurricane season that showed NYC & Long Island has been hit with more category four hurricanes over the last century than the Carolinas. Apparently in 1888 & 1938 the city suffered from a major hurricane... lots of info if you google it.

My recollection of hurricanes here are limited to Gloria, 1986? and Floyd in '99. But to me, the worst damage came with the nor'easter in Dec 1992 when the flood tide claimed both of my cars and some basement damage. The images of the FDR DRive being totally underwater are still fresh in my mind.

Yep, strong hurricanes have occurred here in recent times. I have a street sign from Rockaway (B100 St.) that my friend who lived there gave to me when there was a hurricane a few years ago, strong enough to knock poles down...

Most hurricanes don't make their way up to NY because of cooler water temperatures, and the wind currents. Since 1851, only 12 hurricanes have affected NY.

Hurricanes aren't really a major concern in most of NYC. In some parts of Queens/LI, and Jersey you do have to prepare yourself for a hurricane sometimes.

But a lot of times I find the weather gets blown way out of proportion by local media. A lot of times what would be considered a hurricane here would be a joke somewhere else.

I think the last big storm to hit was Ivan back in 2004. Isabel in 2003. NYC can (and will) have a major hurricane. Anything on the harbor will be flooded out. So always prepare.

Ivan and Isabel did not affect NY. The last hurricane to reach NY was Bob in 1991, category 2. Damage was minimal. NYC can experience hurricanes, but it's geographic location minimizes the chances.

Most of lower Manhattan is in danger of major flooding since many areas are actually below sea level!! A big storm surge will put most of it under water.

And don't forget EARTHQUAKES!! There was a small earthquake in NYC in 2001 ... remember that there is a geological fault that runs along 125 St.

No part of Manhattan is below sea level.

New York City has had two earthquakes (1737 and 1884) both of Magnitude 5.2

In total, New York has had six earthquakes in the past 170 years (most recent in 2002).

Manhattan is NOT below sea level. Battery park is about 8-10' above MHW. The West side Hghwy, East Rvier drive, they flood out on occasion. The no no name storm wrecked havoc on the area. There was the remnants of one hurricane, I beleive 1999 or thereabout which hit NYC with torrential rainfall and flooded out Westchester and Rockland counties.
The real pain in the neck is digging out your car after a big snow storm then having it plowed in or some dirtbag taking your parking place while you were out.
