Where are you moving from and do you have an apartment or are you buying a house? Things in this part of the country are outrageous..for example, on Long Island you need an income WAY above what you make if you need to pay taxes and a mortgage.

$50,000 a year isn't even enough to qualify for a loan to buy a co-op studio apartment let alone 'taxes & mortgage' (which you can't even do on less than $100,000 at todays prices). She is probably going to have to move to the far reaches of Queens near rosedale or Queens Village or around Canarsie Brooklyn. Everything else will be unaffordable at that income.

Default You might be able to swing it

But it would require living WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaay out of the area (like Newbourgh or Poughkeepsie) and then move in to a crap neighborhood. You could then take the 2+ hour train into work (@ $350/ mo)

You could make it work, but it would be one of those where you'd have to ask yourself, "is this worth it?"

A single guy on that amount of scratch works fine (room-mates, top ramen, etc are options) but with a family, you'd be better off living and working elsewhere. And yeah, I know it'll be tough with a wife and kids anywhere with only one wage earner.

Wow! I know many single people who find it hard to live and/or work in New York City earning 50,000, so imagine a family of four!

Can a family of four live on 50 Grand in North Dakota?

I wouldn't even try, except if you get subsidized housing or something.

$50K for a family of four in NYC? Not likely.

You might be able to find something in the Bronx. The Bronx has a bad rep but a lot of parts are actually getting a lot better and they are much more affordable than other parts in the city.

family of 4 living on 50K is going to be tough. The only place I can think of is maybe parts of Queens or Bronx. Other than that, good luck.

If you do live in the Bronx, don't go to the public schools. Unless the school is in the extreme northern Bronx, avoid them. NYC public schools aren't good to begin with, and the Bronx schools have the lowest ratings of all the boroughs.

Do NOT do this! It is not nearly enough money to live. In fact, you would be endangering your family.
