Heard this in the news today. The pilot of the plane is an amazing man. What is more amazing is the back story. The pilot not only is a believer in safety, he helped develop the techniques used before and during a crash landing. He is a consultant that takes what he learned working for an airline and instructs other companies about safety issues. He developed the strategy for getting everyone off the plane in the safest manner. Besides being a commercial pilot he is also a glider pilot, which for those that don't know is an aircraft that flies without an engine. Of all the people to have flying the plane in an engine loss situation, this is the guy that you want on board. Something like 97% of aircraft accidents has some loss of life. It is a miracle how this incident played out. It is amazing that this pilot was at the contols when it happened.

That's a very cool story. Guess he will probably see a dramatic increase in business for his safety consulting business. Can't argue with success!!

so if a plane engine can kill a human i would imagine it could easily destroy a flock of birds
Can't find any data confirming the 1947 crash, but it sounds an awful like the midair collision in Dec 1960 where a United DC 8 (jet) collided with a TWA Super Constellation (prop). The United jet crashed in Brooklyn and the other aircaft crashed on Staten Island. Jet engine intakes and the parts within are very susceptable to damage from any objects ingested large or small.
