Default Why is it that Chinatown doesn't seem to have so much crime?

Well I know that overall, compare to the bad old days, NYC is safer. But Chinatown has always seem safer even though it has been an ethnic place for a long time, in the good times and the bad times. Older generations living with newer people all the time. Children have come and go, and many grow up in the neighborhood. The area sometimes can look ugly, run down, over crowded, public housing in the neighborhood, all the elements that will create criminals and make young people join gangs in numbers and cause trouble in the community like in other neighborhoods. But yet Chinatown seems to ride it too well. What gives?

I'm pretty sure they still have there "bad apples" as well. But Chinatown has had it's issues in the past.

It's never been like scared for your life dangerous but Chinatown does have crime. There's a well documented underground criminal element there, there's pickpockets, as well as a wide arrangement of shady types.

Calculus always helps.

Tthe tongs keep things in check for their own ulterior motives.

Chinatown was very dangerous around the 80's to early 90's. The whole area were controlled by a couple of large gangs, which are still around, but not as publicized. In the past, you couldn't walk around at night without running into a gang member. One thing to keep in mind is that most of the chinese community will keep the activities to themselves - so even if there is a crime committed, it probably will not be reported. Neighborhoods like Chinatown are very close-knitted and "old-school" for lack of a better term - meaning they will not go to the police and keep the problems within their community.

Triads control chinatown (different fractions) then (and now I'm pretty sure). In the 80s and early 90s they were at war with each other so NO, Chinatown was never safe in the past. Now, they aren't talked about nearly as much probably because the media (as usual) is more focused on who Jamonte got shot by last night than who Jun Tao and his gang killed

Why is hiphop always associated with being the main cause for crime (Or was this just a joke)?

Plus I heard that all those stands on the streets that sell t-shirts and such are mafia run. But yes very true about keeping it hush. It also might be due to fear of retaliation by ricky tan and his gangsters.

It's just a stereotype and nothing more.
