New York Vs. L.A. 2 (Brentwood, Hudson: military, apartment, jobs)

Wow, don't even get into this if you're from Texas.

We have UCLA, Pepperdine, USC, CIT, Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona, CSULA, CSULB, CSUDH, CSU Northridge, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, CSU Fullerton, CSU Channel Islands, UCSB just in metro LA.

It's so damn humid in NYC during the summer. The Pacific breeze 1000x better than any Atlantic breeze. Ours actually cools you off when you're hot. We can go in our beaches all year long and during the winter, we can do that and snowboard the same day and then the next day be in Vegas gambling and the next tasting wine up in wine country. Name anywhere else you can do that b/c all those things I mentioned are within driving distance.

And by the way, as long as we are comparing education in these metro areas, Princeton, Columbia, NYU, Fordham, SUNY Stony Brook, Rutgers, Julliard are in NYC metro. The only good ones in LA area are Cal Tech and UCLA

LoL, you complain about Jessemh mentioning Cal but you lump Princeton in there. Princeton isn't even in the state. Neither is Rutgers. I guess USC isn't considered a good school even thought it beats Fordham, all SUNYs and CUNYs , and Rutgers in just about every department. USC is also ranked higher than NYU, 27 to 34 for undergrad. Last I checked, NYU doesn't even have an engineering department. Pomona College, Claremont Mckenna are also in Los Angeles County. I know there are many top liberal arts colleges in the state of New York like Vassar, Hamilton, and Colgate but they're not in NYC's five boroughs. UC system destroys the SUNY schools. The SUNYs are more comparable to the Cal States. Since this discussion is about NYC vs LA, I'm assuming we are discussing schools within the state at least. It's a no brainer that the Northeast has more prestigious schools than Southern California. Otherwise, the state of New York does not have better schools than California, and the city of New York does not have better schools than LA. We'll take the top three from LA and NYC : CALtech, UCLA, USC > Columbia, NYU, and Fordham. For the state : Stanford, CALtech, Cal > Columbia, Cornell, NYU. So no ,NYC does not beat LA schools hands down in any scenario. It's debatable at best. Both areas have disastrous public school systems from k-12, perhaps LA is worst. I'll be the first to admit that if I had kids, I would be pretty reluctant to send them to a public high school in the LA district.

Well we definitely have better schools than Texas .haha. Stanford CALtech, CAL is >>> better than Rice, UTAustin, and Texas A&M. SoCal schools are better than all Texas schools alone and UT system is not comparable to the UC system.

New York's best college is better than California's best college. Nothing in CA can compare to West Point.

What? Thats the exact opposite of what I just said. I am considering the five boroughs for NYC. I pointed out that there are many great liberal colleges in the state of NYC but they are NOT in the five boroughs.

West Point academy is a great institution, but Stanford can definitely hold it's own against any school in the world. It depends on what criterias your measuring a school by. Obviously Stanford graduates do not go through rigorous physical training during their curriculum and they are not required to serve in the military after they graduate, but that doesn't make West Point a superior school to Stanford. Stanford's engineering department would destroy the engineering department at West Point. And which school do you think publishes more scientific research?

And how would you compare an academy like West Point to Cal Tech. Cal Tech graduates go on to become rocket scientists, physicists, chemical engineers etc. where as West Point graduates go on to become politicians, military leaders, lawyers etc. Apples to Oranges.

Its ridiculous to compare four year universities to military academies. They serve different purposes, but all these schools are the best in their respective fields. I have a ton of respect for all those schools mentioned above, but I can't say without qualifications that one school is definitely better than the other.

Barnard College is a top liberal arts colleges located in Manhattan, sorry I left that out. I think they are affiliated with Columbia or something, I'm not too familiar with that school. Pomona College is better though imo. Massachusetts school would probably beat CA. Harvard, MIT > Stanford CIT.

I think the trend is that CA schools are generally more engineering and science focused, whereas New York schools are more focused on the disciplines of law, business, political science, and liberal arts. That's why you have Silicon Valley in Northern Cali, and Wall Street in NYC.

I am 24 yrs old and i lived the first 21 in NY so I think I am qualified to speak on the subject.

NYC is a CITY of 5 Boroughs




1: Manhattan
2:Brooklyn
3:Queens
4:The Bronx
5:Staten Island
LA County is a COUNTY



NYC's Boroughs are also Counties, but only use for state geopraphical purpose. IE: THERE ARE NO POLITICAL SUB-DIVISIONS OF THE BOROUGHS! It is all one city!

LA county is broken up into 88 incorporated cities, and MANY unincorporated communities.

Also, LA County Population densitiy is 2,344 pr sq mile.

Manhattan population density is 66,940 per sq mile. THE HIGHEST IN ALL OF THE UNITED STATES!

LA's population density is 7,876.8 per sq mile. NYC is 27,038 per sq mile. Again, THE HIGHEST POPULATION DENSITY IN THE NATION!

LA is a city that sprawls over 460 sq miles. NYC is only 303 sq miles. Thus, Higher density city enviroment.

Lesson... DON'T COMPARE LA COUNTY TO THE CITY OF NEW YORK.
