Crime in fact is going DOWN not UP, like some people are saying. Seeing these men and women go through the stress of keeping the greatest city in the world safe, and getting paid 59,000 max is a joke. They put their lifes on the line so New York won't be the murder capitol of the world it was back in 1990 (over 2,100 murders). Firefighters and cops should be paid 100,000 a year. Every single one one of them, esapecially after 9-11, but this reality, it will never happen, but cops should get paid WAY more money.

If you only knew. Haha.
BTW, L.A. is supposed to be the second safest city.
Crime should not really be a deciding factor since all major citys in the USA have major issues with crime. More important is what weather you prefure. 4 seasons with extremes, or all around warm. Also do you like less density/more car friendly or denser and transit friendly? Larger homes or smaller apartments? NYC old grit look, or L.A. wannabe paradise?

^^ Right, out of the 12 million or so people living in LA, using Paris Hilton, OJ Simpson, and Michael Jackson will give you an accurate sample of how people in So Cal are like.(sarcasm) Out of the entire population in LA/So Cal, probably less than 1 percent are in the entertainment industry. The rest of us have normal jobs like being engineers, accountants, police officers etc., like anywhere else in the country. But because hollywood is so visible to the rest of the world, LA gets this lame generalization. LA is spread out, its completely impossible to generalize the whole city/population. People living in the beach cities, versus people living in the inner cities have completely different experiences. Whether thats good or bad, that is a more accurate depiction of SoCal, everbody lives in their own bubble. You can live in a nice suburb and be completely oblivious to cities around you.
The people you speak of like Paris, Michael Jackson are so wealthy they probably have homes in every major city so they really aren't accurate representation of LA. They could be doing the dumb crap their doing anywhere in the world. And lets not pretend that there aren't dumbass celebrities and media people in NYC either.

Cornell isn't in NYC correct ? the SUNY and CUNY arent comparable to any of the UC's. The top So Cal schools would be Tech, UCLA, USC,UCSD,UCI, UCSB,and Pepperdine. And if your comparing California Universities to New York's, Cali would still win hands down as well. Cali's top three would be Stanford, Caltech, UCBerkeley while NY would be Columbia, Cornell, and NYU. And NYU is totally overrated imo. It doesnt even have an engineering dept. Its super strong in a few depts but its not comparable to Berkeley,LA, or USC, from a total well rounded perspective. Schools like UCLA,USC,and UCSD doesnt even crack the top 3. If your comparing the entire Northeast to Cali, then yea, theres no contest.

Totally correct....How could we forget cal-tech...and that compares to MIT (or course in mass)

Bull I lived in LA, (Carmen Crest and Outpost) it was misery!
The smog burn's your eyes, dogs bark all night long, you get stopped for walking, stopped if you drive after midnight.
The worst thing is having to spend 1/2 your day in your car to get anything done. They built that whole dam city around the automobile. And made DMV auto (smog) inspection so teight its nuts (they are forcing people to buy new cars)
All those "great" schools are all multicultural nuthouses, at least 60% off the boat immigrants and "Apple heads" who think there she*t dont stink.
The laws are INSANE like most LA's habitualy phoney's always pretending to be sombody they are not and telling New Yorkers "how GREAT it is".
Last the State beaches are all inhabited with bums, You can walk 10 feet without people asking you for money. So many people living in boxes it looks like miniature golf from a distance.

We've been in NYC for almost 8 years. My sister lives in the Valley (Northridge) and begs us all the time to move out there. I just don't know. My wife likes it North of the city, Ventura or Santa Barbara, but just says she can't envision living in the traffic in LA.
NYC, is the first place we've lived since leaving Detroit area that we both like (did 17 years in the South), so just don't know if it would be smart to make the move.
Since my Dad passed, my mom has been thinking of moving out there. Ugh.

I honestly couldn't say how its like to live in Carmen Crest and outpost. I grew up in Redondo beach area and I honestly think the air here is perfect. I don't think I've actually been bothered by a bum before. The weather here, especially during the summer time ( like today) is absolutely perfect for outdoor activities. It just keeps me in a nice mellow mood all the time.
The traffic is generally pretty bad but i know they're working on more public transportation. If it wasn't so taboo to use public transportation in LA, the traffic problem could be greatly alleviated.
Those "multicultural nuthouses" in Berkeley and Stanford are the foundation of talent and ideas of how Silicon Valley was built. Have a little respect. Companies in Silicon Valley such as google, yahoo, cisco, amd, nvidia, ebay, HP, Sun Microsystem, Apple, amongst others are filled with these damn "boat immigrants". Those companies are a key reason why America remains a global power in the 21st century. I hope xenophobic New Yorkers such as yourself stay the hell out of California.
I have nothing against people in NYC or the Northeast. The expereince of living in NYC vs LA (or anywhere in Cali ) is totally different. My expereinces of travelling to the northeast have always been very pleasant. But i know i would personally hate to live in NYC. The initial exciting energy that I experienced in New York becomes somewhat neurotic and unhealthy for me when i stayed longer. People are too edgy for my taste. My impression of people in NYC are that they are extremely proud of their city but they feel the need to put down the west coast to make themselves feel better. I find that to be a huge turnoff. I think New Yorkers who hate on LA or the Westcoast are insecure about something because if you don't like it here you don't have to come. We live 2443 miles apart, our day to day lives hardly affect each other at all. Many New Yorkers i met seem quite miserable and grouchy all the time. Maybe its because of the freezing winters in the northeast while in LA i can still go outside in shorts.
My close friend from so cal that went to NYU and now works in manhattan has a tiny little apt on what most would consider a nice salary. I mean it is really tiny, i cant imagine being happy living like that in the long run. Plus he seems to work like every breathing second and i think thats the norm for new yorkers. So all in all, i think NYC is great place to visit for me, but its not somewhere i would want to live and settle down at all unless i was filthy rich. I've met a ton of people in So Cal that are Northeast transplants and seem to be having great lives here. I guess LA cant be all that bad if so many of you are still moving here all the time.

NY vs Los Angeles Glamour
NO where in the world is class distinction, car fetishism, and body culture all so highly visible, all the while, maintaining a strong sense of nature and earth's beautiful landscape of the Hollywood Hills and the Santa Monica mountains. Los Angeles is glamour.
In terms of diversity, we got Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Little Ethiopia, Olvera Street, Thai Town, Little Armenia, etc...etc...
I am a resident of West Hollywood (mostly russian immigrants and gays), and even though the bars close at 2am, Los Angelenos need their beauty sleep so I don't see why there is a problem with getting to bed at a decent hour.
In terms of edcuation, the University of California is by far the best and mostly highly ranked public school system, with Berkeley and UCLA ranking in many of the nations top 10 programs. As a UCLA alum, I will always remember driving through the lush green rolling hills of Beverly Hills on Sunset Blvd., in order to arrive at my campus which bordered Bel Air to the north.
Not only does Los Angeles offer natural beauty, but also, its people are very hot. There is such an emphasis on physical looks here. In LA, people are attractive, youth and body obsessed, as well as health conscious with many organic restaurants and groceries and a gym on every other block. Makes for great EYE candy!!
And if you're a car buff like me, no where in the world do you see such a large number of high end BMW, Mercedes as well as Bentley and Ferrari. In Los Angeles, you are what you drive, so there is a focus on car image. You just can't get that in NY.

I think that NY is superior to LA in education, night life culture etc, however in response to earlier posts, people like paris hilton are definately not an accurate represetation of southern calif. Most of the legal residents are working people just trying to live. One thing that NY and LA are on the same level of is how underpaid their civil servants are, like the police. I read an article in the NY times that stated that the avg. cadet starts out at 25,000$/ yr. How can they afford to live? Same problem in LA too!

I like L.A because it has Mountains,Beaches,Deserts,Valleys and Microclimates, but I also like the Amazing Variety of Neighborhoods,Culture,People,Entertainment, Shopping,Dining, and the Opportunities L.A offers.
I also like the fact that L.A is not too far from places like San Francisco,Las Vegas,San Diego....Hawaii is just a few hours by plane and Mexico is also nearby.
I also like the Greenery of L.A and the Sprawl....The Sprawl gives me a feeling of breathing room and not all packed in like Sardines.
