Agreed, lemme tell a little story about my evening in the LA jail.
I usually need da freeking translator when I am in California
I am recording in a Sherman Oaks studio one day and run out to Wendys for some quick dinner, with no light or traffic in sight I run across Ventura Blvd.
WOOP WOOP ! Out of nowhere police appear and stop me, I get the story, they know right away I am from New York
The officers ask for ID and write a ticket: "PED (pedestrian) aprox speed 6 MPH", I say **** guys I run faster than that !
Then they ask how much money is on my possession (some vagrancy law).Jokingly I say ….oh come on guys how much you want?
They tell me to get on the ground, push me to the ground shoot me in the back with a stun gun and kick me the the back of my neck…I get arrested.
Next I am sitting in the police station cuffed to a bench next to a bum, and a DWI transvestite
…An hour later I hear my girlfriend Lisa arguing and making a fuss.
Next thing I know she is now getting handcuffed to the bench opposite me. Cops say's: FIGURES you 2 "ash*loes" know each other !
She was busted for Jay walking looking for me.
The police thought Lisa reminded them of Lisa in the movie "My Cousin Vinny" didn’t press the bribery charges They explainined they just didn’t want any guests getting hit by cars in their city. reminding us we are not in New York
"Saying us New Yorker's need to understand we are serious people"
The desk Sargent said all our talking and explanations was giving him acid reflex and to
the hell out of here! ...two $90 ticket's. Then orders the 2 cops that arrested me to drive us back.
Were were picked on because we were from New York, just like Paris Hilton (I know her BTW, shes really harmless and not a bad person her mothers the problem)
The house on Carmen Crest (Hollywood Hill right above the Chinese Theater) was great at night you could see the whole city from downtown to Marina Del Ray but you couldnt walk anyplace. Everbody had dogs that would go nuts then the cops come and tell you "no walking at night"
I couldnt take all the driving and traffic, it was just insane. I wonder if the cops still "close" the Sunset Strip 2AM by coming down the street elbo to elbo with sticks and armer.
I miss is Casa Burger, Im told its gone

Joe L, your experience in LA sounds very interesting. I see that you actually lived in LA LA. I can see why you dislike Los Angeles. When I think of Los Angeles, i just think Southern California. Like I said, LA is really comprised of 30 or so smaller cities, each with their own unique culture. I'm not sure if I would actually want to live in LA LA either but I love many parts of Southern California.

BTW, L.A. is supposed to be the second safest city.
Crime should not really be a deciding factor since all major citys in the USA have major issues with crime. More important is what weather you prefure. 4 seasons with extremes, or all around warm. Also do you like less density/more car friendly or denser and transit friendly? Larger homes or smaller apartments? NYC old grit look, or L.A. wannabe paradise?

You obviously have never been to downtown LA or South Cen trust me its really gutter looking much worse than NYC trust me.

I don't know about that one man, the South Bronx (although better today than in the 70's and 80's) is the worst area I've ever seen. I know somebody in the 43rd Precint of the NYPD in the South Bronx by Yankee Stadium who says they get on average 400 calls per day about stolen cars. In just one precinct, in one part of the city. While crime in NYC is much better than it once was, it is still very evident and the worst areas of NYC are worse than Compton, East LA, etc....
New York and LA are two different cities, but for me, there is no city in the world like New York. NYC has more to offer, culturally, entertainment, sports, nightlife, food, you name it. It just a better city, hands down.

I haven't seen LA (only been there once) like that but from what I hear more often than not people say it's less safe compared to NYC. And I heard the worst parts are worse than anything in NYC.
I dunno I always thought East New York was the worst part of the city not the South Bronx. But that's comparing **** with ****, so whateva.
You sure about that 400 figure. Maybe in a week, but for a day?

Nightlife, EVERYTHING closes at 2AM, the cops sweep the street arm to arm with sticks like Nazi storm troopers. Helicopters buzz all day and night, Mexican gansta's running through yards. Its the most nerve racking place on earth IMHO and Im a guy from Bushwick Brooklyn

That's funny. I lived in LA exactly the same amount of time--back in late 1998. Traffic was awful and parking was worse. I was right in West Hollywood first, then I moved in with a friend on Franklin in Hollywood. It was a bit more sane the further east you went, but god traffic and parking sucked. Worse than NYC.
You are so DAMN RIGHT about people pretending to always be "on" or "big time somethings." It was pathetic. Most people in all clubs, bars, stores, restaurants, friends of friends, acquaintances, etc. were "screenwriters, producers, directors, grip boy, boss of directors, actors, production assistants, wannabe all the previous, and tons of attitude. I was hangin' with some cool peeps too and I saw so much gross **** in terms of high-school mentality and attitudes. It was a sad state.
Anyway, the layout of LA is not conducive (spelling?) to walking, or taking a subway is out of the question. Gotta have that range rover.
On the plus side, I loved the beaches, the weather, and the variety of shopping. Other than that, I'll visit again in 2010 or so.

I've been to LA.
This city is about as shallow, and as fake as they come.

UCLA is certainly an excellent school, but the last time I visited there literally half the student body was Chinese/Korean/Japanese. I doubt the average person in this area would want to deal the unnecessary over-competitiveness resulting from that.
I think Colombia is definitely better than all of those schools since it is Ivy League and has an all around better reputation. NYU probably comes close to trumping all of those schools as well.

Also, St. John's, Pace University, The City University of New York system, are great colleges in their own right. All LA schools care about is college sports.
Futurecop, No cop becomes a officer to get rich. Cops do it for the dedication and service to the community. However, cops in NYC are underpaid. It is a shame and PBA President Patrick Lynch and Mayor Bloomberg, should be ashamed. The NYPD is the GREATEST police force in the world. Period. No department on the face of the planet comes close to the men and women keeping the 5 Boroughs safe. NYC is enjoying it's lowest crime rate in decades. Crime in fact is going DOWN not UP, like some people are saying. Seeing these men and women go through the stress of keeping the greatest city in the world safe, and getting paid 59,000 max is a joke. They put their lifes on the line so New York won't be the murder capitol of the world it was back in 1990 (over 2,100 murders). Firefighters and cops should be paid 100,000 a year. Every single one one of them, esapecially after 9-11, but this reality, it will never happen, but cops should get paid WAY more money.
