Default Moving to NYC with wife-Interracial Couple

Hello,

Myself and my wife are moving to NYC in April and we are an interracial couple. Obviously, NYC is more accepting than most places but I know there are pockets that we MAY need to avoid because we may have some problems(not expected but once in a while). I'm black and my wife is white-Italian so I know that we would probably have more issues in a predominately black neighborhood or an ethnic white neighborhood. I know that Bensonhurst used to be brutal towards blacks, not sure if that's the case anymore. We are looking to move to either Jersey City, Hoboken, Queens, Brooklyn, or even Manhattan closer to the core, not on the residential outskirts of boroughs.

Could anyone name neighborhoods where I most likely could experience problems including northern Jersey? Obviously, we will get looks once in a while but that doesn't bother us(we live in Texas now). However, I always worry that I could run into a hostile area. We've gotten the worse looks by Black females however I'm probably just overreacting.

Howard Beach in Queens, and Bensonhurst Brooklyn are two neighborhoods that you may want to avoid if you are concerned about harassment. Williamsburg in Brooklyn is very progressive so you should not have any concerns there. Same with Greenpoint Brooklyn. Other than that, Manhattan should be just fine, I don't think anyone would even blink. Check out the Bronx too, I don't think you'll have any issues there.

I'd say this is about right. In almost every part of NY and NJ, you will not experience any problems at all. Even in Howard Beach and Bensonhurst, I'd wager you would be fine most of the time.

You have it easy!! I am soon to be relocating to NYC with my girlfriend of 3+ years. She is black and I am as white as it gets. She is from Brooklyn (I am from Maine), and we currently live in LA. We will be driving there and staying with her Aunt in the Bronx until we find a place.

My problem is that everywhere I go, all black men have pretty strong opinions about us. To make matters worse, she is gorgeous, and I am pretty average looking and average to smaller size, so everyone seems to think they can say what they want and get away with it. Which they can, because neither of us really care what they ignorant scumbags have to say. But I would prefer to not subject us to that more than I have to. We should be able to afford $1200 a month, preferably in a 1 bed place.

You guys will have no problems. Majority of NYC neighborhoods are excepting of interracial dating.

You might get a couple of stares here and there but that is normal anywhere.

You should be fine in most places around the city. There are many interracial couples here, of all races. I see more black women dating outside their race, even in predominantly black nabes, so you shouldn't get as many looks here.

I don't think you should expect that either. It can be a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy and then even if a person does look at you with interest, you may take it the wrong way, and they could just be thinking that you're an attractive couple. Just a thought.

I know NYC is liberal. But that is based on voting demographics. We have spent a lot of time in NYC, Maine, Boston, and LA. I know we will get some reaction, but NYC just seems worse. Mainers just give looks. In LA, we get looks with the occasional black dude yelling something at me or ghetto dudes saying some ignorant crap. Boston is actually really good.

But New York, because new yorkers think they are "real" and have to tell it like it is, are by far the worst. I don't mind if they call me names. But only in NY will black guys call her racist things and be extremely mean to us, to put it lightly. Now, my girl can get pretty feisty, and nothing serious has happened. But I just would rather live somewhere that that is less common.

Well, that is a given. But when they say things is when I know they are not interested in watching our homemade porn.
