I was accepted at the queens campus of ST Johns University, and i was wondering about the neighborhood. Is it safe? How far from Manhattan? Things to do nearby?
I was also wondering about the school itslef. any alums out there?
The neigborhood is good, it's Jamaica Estates. The dorms are located on the southwest part of the campus, so it's a bit of a walk to Utopia and Union where many of the off-campus places to go are if you stay in the area.
It's about a 30-35 minute trip to midtown. The Q46 stops at Union Turnpike and drops you off at the Subway on Union and Queens Blvd.
Around St. John's, there's a Barnes and Noble, a Cold Stone Creamery, the Fame Diner, the Sly Fox Inn. As for bars, there isn't much of a scene there anymore since Gantry's closed.
I went there from 1997-2001 when tuition was a little higher than some SUNYs. I think it's close to 30K before room and board.
If you dorm, you might encounter more strict rules than some other schools. I was there when they first started having dorms and remember some rules were strict, but don't hold me to it.
The best thing is to go visit the campus and see for yourself. Good luck!

Hey, I am a SJU Alumn too - graduated in 2000!
The neighborhood is very nice and safe, more of a suburbia feel though so don't expect a lot of excitement. Union Turnpike is where most of the stores and restaurants are. There is a bus that runs right on Union Turnpike that goes straight to Queens Blvd, where it is much more commercialized with shopping and access to trains to take you into the city, malls, etc. The bus ride from the school to Queens Blvd is about 15-20mins.
The campus itself is nice, but I think a little more tighter now since they've built more dorms, a new soccer field, and church on the grounds. There are a lot of hills though, since the land used to be a golf course in the past. It is nicely diversified and a pretty solid school.

I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder for I value that suburban setting so much right there in a beautiful neighborhood in Queens. I did both undergrad and grad work in Manhattan and in hindsight wish I could have attended an NYC school in such a lovely setting.
St. John's has a good reputation, two former governors of prominent states (Califorina and NY) are among its alumni, it is a Catholic university, the offerings seem good, and its graduates can be found among those in industry, academia and government in the city.
One more thing - St. John's University is another rich blessing to the dynamic borough of Queens in New York City.

Small World, that two SJU alums from the same time pop on here. Forgot to mention they've also added a new athletic facility which from the looks of it has a nice basketball court. Unfortunately I haven't tried it out since they don't have alumni ID cards anymore.
