Just passed a woman sitting on Fifth Avenue, a dignified-looking black woman perhaps in her 40s, sitting on the sidewalk, as it happens midway between Cartier and Tiffany. She's got a large cardboard sign saying something like, "Living outdoors and looking for work. Typing 70wpm, with Powerpoint and Excel. Any assistance is appreciated."

Wish I knew a good employment agency for her.

You can actually make quite a living off of begging. Think about it. If 100 people give you $1 thats $100 a day x 30 days in a month = $3,000 a month. Most of it they blow on drugs and booze anyways.

Anyways, anyone can write anything they want on a sign. I NEVER give people on the street money however I do give them food. I don't spend my money on drugs so I don't want others spending my money on drugs either.

No coincidence these people congregate in all those tourist hotspots to rip off naive visitors. Panhandling should be illegal. There are many services out there to help homeless people.

The ones you see on the street and on the subway are not begging because no one will help, but because they are conniving, mentally ill or addicted to something.

People, people, she wasn't begging. She was hoping for work. There's a difference.

Totally with you! I am a born and raised New Yorker but now no longer live there. I moved about 2 years ago and one of the disturbing trends I noticed just before leaving was that the lines at soup kitchens were growing longer by the day. Many of those hoping for free food were amazingly well dressed. In better times they probably had good jobs but NY is brutal for anybody that does not have a job and unemployment goes only so far!

I really hope for everybody's sake that the economy does turn around - the frightening thing is that nobody seems to have noticed that it keeps getting worse every passing month!

I feel terrible anytime I see a homeless person or someone begging for money. I can tell you that if things ever got that bad for me, I wouldn't want to be homeless in this city--no way. I'd try to move to where I could find work.
