Apparently, several people are saying that to her, hence the response. I'm guessing her friends were very shallow. Oh and yes, I did realize you were making a dig towards me with the "let alone 2 people", but I was being a little sarcastice (typical NYer).

I never saw any other poster saying that to her, but I guess I could have missed it. I am not making a dig at anyone, just making a point that the comment doesn't make any sense, no matter who is saying it.

You see I love city life period, but I want the suburban life for my kids and I feel (could be wrong) that NY's suburbs are so far off. Boston's suburbs are not that far from the city, nor philly's, DC's, Miami's - I don't know what do you think?

Its not about what you want, its about what your kids want. Is there any reason why you think your kids are better off in the burbs?

It all depends upon which suburb, since parts of Westchester and New Jersey have faster commutes to Midtown than do places within the city limits. Much of it is perception, since the suburbs in the NYC metro area are not all terribly far at all, on par with city commutes in many cases.

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents here. If you love the cold Chicago is your best bet, but there are a multitude of cities that offer a lot of similar things that NY does. I have lived in the outer boroughs most of my life, but really never wanted to live in the "City" - that obviously is not for everyone. I think people really get deceived by movies and how things really are here. I myself am ready to leave NY for different reasons, I have 2 boys and want a backyard for them to play in and street where they can ride a bike, without me worrying what the hell is going on. I'm told by some people in these forums that I am upper middle class due to my income (combined with my husband 170K). I wish someone would tell my bank account that, because it sure can't tell that. I only mention this because the only people who I know that live very comfortable are trust fund babies and can keep up with everything that is expected of a NYer so to speak. I have found that I do not make use of any of the things that make NY what it is. I don't love broadway and I've been to the Museum's once - personally that is enough. I don't think you have to go to them 4x's a year, but again that is me personally. As another post pointed out, if you are not worried about the designer outfit that someone is wearing then what really is NY to you? I don't want to bash LA, that is not my point, but LA has been known as a town to be superficial and I feel like NYC is getting that way (or is it already that way). I can't blame you for wanting to get away from that. I wish you luck in your choices and hope that you are able to find that job where ever you go.
You hit the nail right on the head. 170k a year is far from upper middle class in NYC in my opinon though. I don't care what the stats show, the purchasing power (especially realestate) is not that great with that kind of an income for a family there. There's probably more 'born an breed' ny'ers from the outer boroughs than in Mannhattan. And from what I remember, walking down most streets in Brooklyn or Queens, wasn't exactly a 'fashion show'.

There are parts of Chicago that are very 'fashion sensitive' too. Do you think the 'average Ny'er' dresses or acts much different than the 'average Chicagon'? It always based on money and education levels, no matter where you live. A person in Chicago with a six firgure income is no different than a Ny'er with one. They will share alot of the same interest, whether it's clothes, culture, etc.

Some people who live in Mannhattan, really need to get over themselves. Some of those people think that there so much more sophisticated and cultured than the rest of the country. For one thing, most of us could care less. Second, alot of us know the truth about what really goes on and how 'life' really is in NYC. Not saying it ain't great for some, but for a vast majority, it ain't no different than elsewhere as far as what the 'average' person does on a day-to-day basis in their daily lives.

very true. typically, lincoln park and gold coast are the two neighborhoods (they are next to each other by lake michigan) in chicago where ppl tend to be fashion sensitive. I did not pay too much attention to it until a friend of mine came to visit from uptown. He's dressed in a gap top and got looks from people on the street. I, being the typical Saks and Neiman shopper, never really had that experience.

First of all, six figure income is not like before. Its not a big deal making six figures. The average income per capita in Lincoln Park and Gold Coast is $140,000. And the neighborhood is full of mansions and swank condos. And yes. a person in chicago with a six figure income has slightly more purchasing power when it comes to real estate than NYC.

Ive been to those neighborhoods in Chicago and I know what your talking about. But alot of people from NYC (especially Mannhattan) thumb their noses at Chicago and other cities. The biggest difference being, people with identical jobs, in NYC and Chicago, the person in Chicago will either rent or own their own place, where's in NYC, they'll have a roommate and maybe never be able to afford their own place.

I'm not talking about people with big high powered jobs. I'm talking about people who have good and decent jobs, but not not glamorous ones. The quality of life issue, alot of them like to ignore. I can understand for those people who have unlimited amounts of money, but for the rest of them?

I guess some people are more easily impressed than others though. You can tell them that til your blue in the face and they won't listen. Oh well, let them think what they want I guess.

Because that is what they want - exactly what you said. They want to be able to be outside and play and can't do that where we live.
