There are solutions!
You're just at the age when car rental companies will start renting to you. Renting in NYC is pretty easy because many people do not own cars. Another solution are car timeshare places like Flexcar or Zipcar or you join a cooperative. Pay a monthly fee and you get rights to use a car for so many hours a week or month depending on your needs. It's easy since you don't have the headaches of parking or insurance or maintenance. The only inconvenience is that you have to plan your travel and you may be paying for a service you wouldn't use. Even if you don't though, it's a lot cheaper than keeping a car in the city.

I would try one of the online sites to get a "feeler" quote for what insurance will run you. I would guesstimate in the area of $1500-$2500/yr, based on my recent dealings. Maybe as low as $1000 if you can find a deal somewhere. If you find anything lower than that, send me an email with the name of the company because I will want to switch! Vehicle license and whatnot in NYC is reasonable, I want to say like under $40/yr plus $20 for the inspection, but I would have to dig out my receipts to say for sure. Or you could try to check here: http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/

From some of the threads I've read, and my impression, you don't need wheels in those neck of the woods (NYC).
I could be wrong.
I know for a fact that you do need wheels down here in South Africa to get around.

It depends. In Staten Island, you most likely need a car. It Manhattan, you most likely DON'T need a car. In Brooklyn, I could go either way, probably leaning towards you don't NEED it. I can't speak to the Bronx and Queens.

You really dont need a car within the NYC city limits. But if you're like me, snowboarding in the winter, hiking, the beach, wakeboarding in the summer, you really need that car to get away.
But it really can be cheaper to rent for those things and not pay the $2000 or so on the insurance that you will definitely pay , the ridiculous prices, and the TONS of tickets you will get learning which day to move your car before going to work so the street sweepers dont get you. The number of mornings i spent going around the block CURSING while running already late to work.
oh and dont forget the money you will spend to replace the glass and car stereo after they break into your car. Yes, my 1991 Mazda protege was broken into in park slope.
You didnt hear it from me, but people will keep their cars registered out of state to save on insurance. And that lady wasnt joking by quoting you several thousand dollars. Brooklyn is one of the most expensive counties in the US as far as car insurance goes.
And go with GEICO!!! Im a 30yr old queens resident, clean record, FULL coverage even glass, $1500/yr. good luck!

Did anyone in Brooklyn try www.tailads.com for getting money for driving around with a bumper sticker ad on their car? I was wondering how much they pay in the area of NYC/brooklyn

The city is cracking down on out of state cars. What you save on insurance you will lose from tickets.

I just found this thread searching google. lol... I am 25 from VA Dc suburbs too and trying to move to Brooklyn in a week. I am just wondering how safe is it too have a nicer looking car? Whats the likelyhood it would get broken into? I have a 2004 Overland Grand Cherokee that has all sort of factory fancy trim and bling looking wheels. The only reason I am keeping my SUV is I am a bass player and need to mvoe around equipment and such.

I think it depends on the neighbourhood, but in the years I had a car in Park Slope, I never got broken into but did have a few driveby, unreported scratches and the loss of a mirror.
Probably some neighbourhoods may be more dangerous, but overall I had more difficulty with break-ins in New England than New York

I'm thinking SE D.C. is probably worse then quite a few area's in NYC too. I've had to ride home from DC in friends cars sitting on broken glass on several occasions
